Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Latency looks OK here, mind sharing a URL to where you're seeing the slow throughput to?

370ms on chronkiller's EU hops? I don't think that's normal AfriGuy. :erm:

Coupled with the slow speed, the ping and packet loss is also the issue as reported by myself at around 10AM.

Here's another trace to the Blizzard EU server:

Can somebody explain: - my ping to Afrihost was 10-11ms for the past years.
Now it is 40ms stable.
Whats going on?

Videos are not streaming, Facebook takes ages. This Durban-JHB tcore link stuff is really infuriating. Working in social media management i am struggling with the slow speeds.

Here is a tracert to Facebook..

Have you noticed your speed has gotten better or more consistent?

Either way, what I think may have happened is the following:

It may be due to Telkom's ASSIA system that they implemented at the beginning of this year. basically it's a system that monitors your line for noise and adjusts it accordingly to fastpath or interleave.

The difference is that fastpath on noisy lines can cause lower overall speeds whilst maintaining acceptable ping times. Interleave is applied when various conditions are met of which one is a noisy line. Interleaving basically stabilises your line which will allow the user to maintain the speeds they paid for. The downside is that the error-correcting introduces a delay, usually ~20ms increase, which is what causes the higher-than-normal ping times.

Internet is hot garbage right now and I'm trying to stream the cricket. Critical care lip service isn't responding to me, telephonic lip service is putting me on hold and it seems lip service here doesn't know what's going on either. These issues in Durban have been on and off persistently for weeks now.

I'm constantly being told that the network team is on it, so either this problem is the most difficult thing to solve, or your network team is just plain daft.

I'll need to check on a Traceroute, on which hop have you seen an increase in latency.

Thanks to everyone that has submitted traceroutes so far, I've forwarded all of these results to our Team and they are looking into this urgently.

One more time about ADSL issue:
Line 8mbps
Capped account
All line, ping and speed tests are 100%
Pages load fast with full speed - 800KBps
Downloads, torrents, youtube - full speed
Problem is with embedded video in overseas webpages - the best is 50-60KBps and very often simply stops.
I tried other ISP - most of them is the same. Crystal is slightly better.
Different ISP's, different routes - same result.
The same pages working fine as i switch my router to 3G.
The same video running full speed.
No any problems at all!
Checked with different PC on network not to use cashed download.
Internet connection speed with 3G even slower - 5 - 7Mbps (600KBps)
The same home network, router, PC's and settings.
IMHO this is something higher on the ADSL pipe than Afrihost or some wrong common settings for ADSL ISP's.
Hope that somebody can solve this problem.

I've found the same slow youtube experience I have with AH with WA as well, so I think either Telkom is limiting youtube or access to the google cache, or google has issues, or the ISP interconnections with google has issues. Netflix works a treat when youtube is crap.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/845340-ADSL-slow-speeds

I have logged calls with both Afrihost and Telkom and have transferred the management of the line to Afrihost.

I need some advice on how to go about finding resolution to this as when I call Afrihost they log a call with Telkom, Telkom comes out investigates a low and behold ... everything seems stable. Afrihost agents do pick up some issues on the line though.

Not sure how to go about getting someone to take accountability.
