Response times to the modem don't necessarily mean that the modem or router is functioning perfectly on all protocols. Nor does it mean it is routing efficiently on all protocols. It just means that ICMP is routing fine. TCP and UDP traffic operate a little differently, so always best to test thoroughly when this sort of thing happens. Pinging bras is fine but it doesn't show the step before, and in addition an ICMP response time may be different to TCP packets or UDP packets traversing the same route (majority of the data you consume is TCP and UDP protocol). So I'd suggest, in the efforts of going the extra mile here to rule out all other possibilities, to test with another modem with the splitter off the line, and see if you can replicate. If you can, it sounds to me like rather odd exchange congestion or a line fault. If the results are not replicated, you can very easily identify the modem/router as the culprit...

Good advice here. Thanks, DJ :)

Just my luck. I have a Zyxel SBG3300-N waiting in my study for when my fibre gets installed.

I have a Zyxel at home, had i about 3 years. Really had no problems with it, though it doesn't handle load shedding well (if any router does). Otherwise it's serving me well :)

Is there any way to get my line sync rate set without having to contact Telkom again? was set incorrectly last night but yesterday was perfect...

Telkom technicians should be the only ones who can adjust sync rates. To my knowledge they've taken the feature away from their call centre people :(

That is definitely concerning. What sort of throughput are you getting?

Speedtest during these times are great and I can stream youtube in HD. But don't try and load facebook or refresh gmail. After 22:00 it's as if something switches over and then everything works perfectly.

We did some DNS routing changes last night, that's about it. If you getting good local and international throughput, that is super weird. Drop me a PM, I'll see if I can see any red flags :(

Hi, I just want to know if the Premium Uncapped 4meg is good enough for downloading p2p, because I am leaving Mweb at the end of the month, and need a new isp. I also don't want to pay more than the 4meg Premium Uncapped from Afrihost.

You guys used to be able to adjust sync rates, i used it so many times... Telkom should have left that feature with you guys... They have changed a lot and now you guys do not have much control over the lines anymore. I got this sorted with the Telkom twitter team, thanks.

That's reassuring! My Xyxel won't have to worry about load shedding. My house is on a UPS.

P2P and downloads will be shaped depending on the overall network load, which is mostly during office hours. Your realtime services like browsing, streaming VoIP etc are all left untouched.

How much data do you go through a month though? Might be worth looking at a Capped account, which is completely unshaped.

Telkom revoked that functionality some time back, it's essentially been replaced with ASSIA which does this automatically.

Hello Afriman, i have a problem, my DSLAM SNR is 7.0db and this drops intermittently below 6.0db which causes issues, how can i get this up a bit, my ADSL to Exchange is 11.0db, which is fine.

Hi

These stats are an indication of your line's strength, usually dropping the sync rate can help with this.
6dB is OK, it's borderline, but should provide a decent experience.

PM me your line number and I can take a closer look at the stats for you :)

Awesome, thanks, will do now. if need be, please drop the sync. whatever gives off the best experience, i have seen drops.

Hi all. How is your latency looking on the AH network?

Mine always used to be much better, more like 15-20ms. Only since the beginning of this year have they been like this.

You've most likely been pushed over to an interleaved profile, which can increase your latency a bit.
This result is still quite acceptable for a local test :)
