Sorry about that :(
I'll test torrents in a bit, have you tested other downloads?

Everything else works perfectly on both accounts (AH Bus. and AG), but torrents are maxing out at 4KB/s. I have another source for the file via http, and that is running at full speed ;)

EDIT: Just a note, I am having trouble with YouTube - anything above 360p buffers (10MB line).

Hi

Line transfers can take some time, it depends on where abouts the migration is.
Drop me a PM with the number and I'll see what can be done here.

Unfortunately a few days downtime is unavoidable since Telkom changed their wholesale transfer process :(

Hi Afriguy, I have already cancelled the request to have the line managed by AH. It seems too much of a trouble to have this done. I don't have time to be chasing Telkom to move my line into wholesale holding pool. I have changed my mind and I just needed you guys to ensure that I don't experience billing problems going forward as clientzone says that cancellation will be effected end of November even though there was never a migration. I have sent you PM so long as requested.

Odd, sounds like something funky is happening here.
Could you PM me an example torrent and YouTube link, along with your DSL username, so I can run some tests on my end?

Happy to test these services for you if you want to drop me those links to test :)

Best to test individual links (rather than the site in general) so we can replicate exactly what you were doing.

I saw much better performance on both of these sites only after 1AM yesterday, but they both performed badly throughout the whole of yesterday. This is a constant problem when the weekend starts.

Hearing this from you
The issue seemed to be on the IPC itself and we hard to institute shaping on Uncapped accounts aggressively to compensate for the loss of throughput in the region.
I'm really starting to think twice about moving to uncapped since this is how you handle poor performance, especially since the performance has been poor for so long

I really need to check some tests on when things don't perform well for you, there aren't any general problems on the network which can cause poor performance, so each query will need to be looked at on a case by case basis.

Torrents are a bit meh today.

Just ran a few tests, results seem OK on my end.
Can you let me know what you get, in terms of throughput, on this torrent please?

OK then which tests would you like to see?

I probably won't be able to replicate the type of experience I had over the weekend but lets give it a go.

We'll need to take a look at test results when you see the issues creep in.
A few speedtests and a traceroute/ MTR is always a good place to start.

Maybe follow something like this, it helps me nail down issues:

Local speedtest
International speedtest
Local traceroute
International traceroute
MTR
Check DNS

I'm more than happy to provide these tests for you :)

Regarding this screenshot http://puu.sh/l6Mc4/9feb88528d.png
The last point mentioned is regarding shaping;is this still "outside Afrihost's control" since this is a new network?

Not at all, nearly every aspect of network management is done from our end.
I think what that last point refers to are aspects outside of the Afrihost network. Shaping rules haven't changed, Capped and Business are unshaped while Uncapped remains a semi-shaped product with P2P/ downloads being shaped while realtime services are unshaped.

Hi Afripersons,

I have noticed that during/after the weekend my router is syncing on a new protocol: ADSL_G.dmt.

Sync protocol (set on auto) used to sync at ADSL2+

My line witH Afrihost is 10Mbps, but because of attenuation I never see more than about 6Mbps on a good day.

Some quick google searches reveal that ADSL_G is a sync protocol that is limited to 8Mbps. But I might be mistaken.

Now the question is whether this is related to Telkoms new 8Mbps offering? If so, then was this a deliberate change and will my monthly line charge be reduced accordingly?

(A call was logged on the weekend before I noticed this because the line was performing very badly. Then we had the issues in the East which complicated diagnosis).

Hi Gavin107,

I wouldn't be able to tell you right off the bat why (or if) Telkom have recently changed your modulation, but I can say that GDMT if not entirely ideal on a 10Mbps - or even 8Mbps for that matter! Please drop me a PM with your details and I'll definitely look into it for you and request fr your line to be set back to ADSL2 if necessary. :)

Thanks AfriFella. Thats interesting. The strange thing is that in contrast to the weekend, my line has been relatively stable (performing well) all day on ADSL_G.dmt If things go pear shaped I'll PM details and we can try investigate some more. :)

Awesome! :) I'm not sure why your modulation would just change... But I'll happily look into it for you when you need me to! :)

@AfriPeeps - guys this is slightly off topic, but this appears to be the only way to get real support - the AH call center is proving inept. I've picked up an anomaly with bandwidth accounting. See below.
Sent on 01/11 @00h26
It's 00h26 and my account shows 7GB utilized. This is not accurate. My last download completed at 00h08 and would have consumed approx 1GB (at full line speed). Please advise urgently where the other 6GB went.

The replies from support are inept and miss the point :(
Thanks for the feedback:)

We often receive logs delayed from Telkom, & the usage logs aren't always by the hour.

However you can rest assured the data reports are always logged for the packets that passed through fort the respective account.

I replied and indicated that they'd not addressed how 6GB was consumed when that was impossible given the timeframe...
Thank you for your mail.

Unfortunately we do not monitor what the data is used for due to privacy laws, however we monitor the sessions hourly.
We monitor the upload and download usage per hour.
Please kindly find attached data logs for the amount of data used.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

So the long and the short of it is that I believe AH is applying usage data late thus are consuming the new month's cap inappropriately... and that, if it's proven to be the case, is not cool!
Thing is - this is flying past your Call Center team... Doh!!! :wtf:

Let me know who to PM with the ticket number.
