Afrihost New Network Feedback

Yesterday this time I was fed up and tired of doing line resets, router reboots and trying to figure out why my internet sucked. Traceroute and pings in Afrihost Test tool was all tripple digits. During the day my wife was complaining that she couldn't work. Tonight all is good though. Getting close to 10mbps. This is on a 10mbps Business Uncapped package.

That's weird. If your exchange is congested it normally is at its worst in the evening when every Tom, Dick and Harry is trying to stream and download.

Did you say you had an uncapped connection? May as well downgrade to a 6Mbps account and save money.

i tried the uncapped premium axxess account, but this is on a capped account with Afrihost

my latency issues are pretty good these days, but i dont think im suppose to be that low on a speed test, considering that im supposedly less than a km away from the exchange

im still not happy with the below results for an 8mbps line

What are your line stats?
My line stats have been degrading lately, only have 6.8dB SNR @ 10Mbps when a month ago I had 8.9dB.
Code:
Uptime	38Days 14hrs 55min 24sec
Time connected	33Days 10hrs 15min 10sec
Modulation type	G.992.5-A
Actual rate (up)	1020 kbps
Actual rate (down)	10236 kbps
Data transfered (sent)	0 kB
Data transfered (received)	0 kB
Output power (up)	12 dBm
Output power (downstream)	17.7 dBm
Line attenuation (up)	23 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream)	42.7 dB
Noise margin (up)	6.4 dB
Noise margin (downstream)	6.8 dB

This has also been my longest uptime ever :erm:

Glad things have normalised for you :)
If you do see these results again, please grab another speedtest and a traceroute to paste up here - interested in seeing where things are getting bad.

What's your line syncing at?
Did you update your router settings to resolve the DNS and IP conflicts between public and private networks?

Also, I'd recommend removing the attachment, as it lists your public IP.

Yes the router was updated with the help of Johnatan, so that is no longer an issue. The line shows its syncing at 8, but im still trying to figure out what the general speed on an 8mbps line should clock out at

Sorry again about the image, not sure anymore what im allowed to show.

Public IPs are generally a no go :p
The theoretical max throughput you'll see on an 8Mbps line is about 860KB/s - entirely depends on the required DSL overheads though. If you have another ISP to test that'll give you the best idea, or average, between the two and what your line is truly capable of.

Interestingly i can go up to 20mbps VDSL, and im considering whether its worth the extra 100 rand outlay. Ive been trying to see what VDSL would give me over ADSL, but the only thing i can find out around here is i need a new modem *sigh* :D

VDSL may be better as it'll run via an MSAN as opposed to a DSLAM - so slightly different architecture compared to what ADSL offers.

The other day I rebooted and noticed beforehand that I had 22 days uptime. On my old DSL connection I would probably have suffered noticeable degradation before 10 days. Might be the case that a 'good quality' connection doesn't need to care about uptime.
Are you still happy with your fibre connection? :)
