What is this $h!t? It started around 7-8pm
Tracing route to www.afrihost.com [41.181.185.18]

Trace complete.

That latency looks terrible. We do find that sometimes traceroutes show higher latency than ping tests. Could you please try running a straight ping to the domain or IP and seeing if it reports differently?

OK so performance was restored for a really short amount of time, Twitch is completely effed now. Afrihost please step up your game.

Twitch was running great for a while and yesterday when we tested. Will check with the team if anything might have changed :(

Hi all,
Issues in CPT this evening.
Latency is high and speeds are awfully low. 20mbps line. Speeds <9mbps.
Saix Speedtest to the Rosebank server
Code:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 5646 kbps (705.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1425 kbps (178.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Seeing packet loss.

definitely seems consistent with what others reported and that packet loss is very, very concerning.

What are things like this morning for you?

*sigh* I have not had a speedy connection in days now on my 4Mbps connection :( download speed to any service hovers around ~1.1Mbps at all times of the day :(

I just think I am cursed with an over subscribed exchange :(

A traceroute will show better if this is the exchange. From the results that others have posted, best to wait until we know there are no latency problems on our general network before making any conclusions on that :(

Didn't have any issues for the last few days. YouTube is working perfectly with no buffering, even when playing videos in high definition. :)

The above two traces both show mtnns-2.jinx.net.za
Have we moved back onto MTN again, even for part of the route.
If so I think you may need to rethink that.

It's showing them routing into MTN's network to reach our website. It's not on the core network routing portion of the trace :)

Good to know. Seems like the problems reported may affect some clients and not others. We'll definitely need to figure out why.

I'm afraid I can't since it seems it was either resolved or it was load related around the IPC hop. I ran the tracert twice, ping plotter had showed the same result so the tracert for last night is valid I assure you. Indeed ping plotter was showing 3-6% packet loss on this hop:
2 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms 169-0-23-1-access.afrihost.co.za [169.0.23.1]
3 137 ms 135 ms 132 ms ipc-rx-b-access.afrihost.co.za [169.1.1.238]

Ping plotter would also run like a traceroute so I don't know if it would avoid that anomaly we see where trace routes show latency that continuous ping does not. Maybe as a test compare with a straight ping from command line to see if you see vastly different results.

Our network team report that they were busy with tests around shaping until quite late last night. They've also said that we saw a bit more demand on the network than usual, probably around the Apple streaming event, so this might also have played a small role.

The tests are set to run until the end of the week, so the aim is to reduce or eliminate any impact to services, except for the intended impact to shaping on Uncapped accounts.

FTFY

Haha - i would have thought we have moved passed thinking of Business as anything but an unshaped product.

I humbly accept your addition to my post ;)
Just being cautious.
Don't want any members pulling out their pitchforks and torches, now do we?

But on a side note - thanks for the heads up.
Hopefully when the tests conclude the network will be running like it should.

It definitely will. I think when there is no testing going on, we always see excellent performance so the light at the end of the tunnel is extremely bright.

Just please make sure the bright light isn't an oncoming train.

Can I assume that if you are starting to shape uncapped accounts that we will get the Turbocharge button back soon?

Yes, definitely, that is something we are working on. We should have the same functionality when the network is fully deployed.

We are also working on making shaping more dynamic (in favour of shaping clients less if we can) and if that changes, I'll give you guys a breakdown of exactly how we will be shaping in the future.
