Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

Our network team report that they were busy with tests around shaping until quite late last night. They've also said that we saw a bit more demand on the network than usual, probably around the Apple streaming event, so this might also have played a small role.

The tests are set to run until the end of the week, so the aim is to reduce or eliminate any impact to services, except for the intended impact to shaping on Uncapped accounts.

I will test again tonight since I am on business uncapped, and would not have expected it to impact me since its unshaped supposedly... It did however, unless my case of latency issues on the IPC network were unrelated.

Just following up on ping vs tracert etc.: I was getting 400ms latency in quake live local which prompted me to do the tracerts, so whether tracert or ping etc. the quake live test is the final authority on this matter. I merely give the tracerts as information for your use during this POC. I can say the "old" network is still as poor as dung in terms of packet loss, but its latency was ok. I Switched to it after afrigreen failed on me.

BTW this is ping plotter's selling pitch:
Get notified about network problems the moment they occur and find culprits quickly with PingPlotter's network performance graphs and alerting system. All desktop licenses enjoy free mobile edition upgrades.

Part of the testing is to ensure that any shaping we do does not impact other products or other services. Remember that we are designing and implementing these rules for the first time, so there is potential for things to have unexpected artefacts, but we do our best to avoid them. The test results that you post are definitely helpful and hopefully will help us improve your experience.

Trying to update Xcode after fresh install and stuck at sub 100KB/s on average.

How are your other download speeds looking?

Do you know from which server the update is being downloaded?

NNTP appears fine

the download appears to be fluctuating wildly, no other devices downloading at this time

If you know of a way to id the destination server I'll be happy to traceroute to it?

May I ask what app you are using in your screen shot that shows network traffic?

You may, its iStat Menus, simply brilliant proggy (bear in mind its OSx :) ) and has a huge amount of customizable options to show exactly what you want to see.

Ok managed to find out how to resolve the current active connection names (nettop in terminal btw) and its resolving to a local Akamai mirror it seems, however the download is still up and down.

Thanks for the update, we're looking into this! I have a feeling though that the low download speed may be caused by the download mirror itself, as opposed to our network, but if there is something we can do about it, we definitely will!

Thanks man, aren't the Akamai mirrors usually pretty decent?

Are you busy testing shaping rules? I'm testing at half my normal line speed.

We're testing a few changes on the Shaping system, but this shouldn't be affecting your speedtests, could you quickly restart your modem and check if there is any change.

They definitely are! But that is not to say that you will always get your maximum speed from a specific mirror, there are network and usage concerns as well.

Haven't posted here for a while, but then I guess it has been smooth sailing so far on afrigreen for me when I have been in front of my pc.

I've restarted the router.
For some weird reason my Telkom account didn't want to work with speedtest.net. It worked with MyBroadband and I got full line speed.

Still running at half speed with AfriGreen.

That's odd :(
Have you tried switching back to your regular account to see if throughput is improved?

I'll try. I did notice that the routes have changed after I restarted the router.
