Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

HTTP downloads are flying smoothly on Afrigreen at the moment, this is of course marvelous BUT it seems when downloading 100% of the available bandwidth is used, web pages won't open, devices connected to the network can't access the net, not even updates on GooglePlay. Basically everything else grinds to a halt, if I disable the downloads things return to normal.

I do not want to activate Business optimization as my old account when working allowed for all devices to connect and do whatever was needed while downloads were in progress.

Also it seems Business optimization is (active as in working not as in active in my profile).. I noticed this last night when testing download speeds (which at first were not at all impressive) Checking the clientzone I saw Optimization was checked by default, which I disabled. There was a definite difference in download speed after that.

You should set up QoS on your router. I have mine set to the default Expedited Forwarding profile (EF). On this profile, all VOIP data and things like Skype/Hangouts go out first. Then the priority moves to gaming, then to browsing, then to streaming and finally to downloading. I can have someone watching Netflix, while another Skypes, while I'm in a game using Mumble for VOIP, and on a 4Mb line that's not bad.

Here's my feedback. My location is Jeffreys Bay, on a 4Mb line. I was on a free 1GB capped account, which I kept on hand for testing every few weeks/months.

UnoDNS thinks I am here:

Finally, Youtube performance:

Capture2.jpg

The buffer runs ahead eventually, but my account with Crystal Web flatlines it at 3.0Mb/s after their recent changes to their network. Seeing sub-1.7Mb/s speeds on Youtube again is disappointing. 33 frames were dropped at the beginning of the video while the buffer struggled to run ahead. I'd try 720p60 videos, but I know I'm going to have a bad time.

Downloading the Catalyst 15.7 drivers from AMD doesn't use all the available bandwidth, sits around 303KB/s average. Downloading a PDF file from my backups on OneDrive does not max out the bandwidth, that sits at ~280KB/s. Streaming from Twitch is poor as well, it can't stay at a reasonably flat rate for long. Altogether not a bad deal, but not a great one either. The local lag induced at hop 2 in my tracerts is not doing you any favours.

Morning Everyone

I just firstly want to say - a huge thank you to everyone that has posted their feedback. This is really super valuable to the network team, you guys are really pushing the testing ahead by leaps and bounds! Helps to test with the right crowd, I guess ;)

Just a reminder that there are a couple of known issues, which we are aware of (was also included in Gian's email):

Geolocation might still not be working. We work with MaxMind, who updates geolocation databases for all the major providers like Speedtest etc. So we've given them the IP range for us, but we need to wait for the service providers to update their databases. We saw this take a little time with the move over to MTN 3 years ago. Please be patient, it will come right :)

If you're in the East or the South, you're going to see anywhere from an extra 15ms to 60ms of latency, especially depending on where your destination ping is. So if you're in the South, you're going to break out in JHB, then make the trip back to the South to ping a local server. This will be totally different when we have local IPC in the major locations as we currently have on our existing network.

If there are any other known issues (which we can't immediately resolve) I'll post them up here so you can factor into your tests.

Thanks again everyone - you are super awesome for helping us get this right :)

I am (perhaps overly) concerned that pages like YouTube and Netflix just do not open or are very very poor.
What is AH doing with the shaping / policies for streaming?

Shouldn't be the case. I was definitely able to open YouTube on my side yesterday. Was unfortunately studying last night, so I didn't run much testing on my side. Also heard from one of the network guys that Netflix should be working as well. Please pop that into the ClientZone submission form, we need to make sure those are working and possibly contact you to test.

Shaping is basically the same as it was on the MTN network. We're using different technology, so it may take some adjustment to transfer the policies but we'll do everything we can to make them exactly the same for now if the new kit allows this.

AfriGreen is very slow and High pings compared to Normal Today..

Can you post a traceroute so I can check that out? My report shows normal pings. I only have very high level, rudimentary reports right now. Will definitely help :(

Not sure I am aware of that one. Is that a site that is not loading? Can you please paste a traceroute so I can see where the traffic is being blocked or incorrectly routed?
Site not loading. Will run a trace route this afternoon evening .
