Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

My experience on the new network has been pretty great. Hope this is the new Afrihost speeds, cause I can get used to this.

Just for testing purposes on our side, were you running anything else on your connection?

Are you seeing similar performance from other Twitch.tv content?

I was running nothing else. That was the only tab open. All devices had their WiFi off. Only this PC was connected via LAN.

It's all Twitch content. Let's use YouTube as an example, you can see it sits at full speed constantly until it stops after a while (YouTubes DASH buffer). Twitch speed is all over the place. It will jump to full 3600kbit then down to 2500, 1800, randomly basically.

The reason I use that specific Twitch clip is because of the fairly high average bitrate of 3000 (max bitrate attained is still lower than my line speed, 3500). For other Twitch clips I just run at high(mostly) doesn't buffer since the average of Afrigreen's erratic speed is usually high enough.

Just tried that, it won't even start the Video.

Also try access http://www.asus.com/ZA/

Seems international is borked :o

That page loads fine for me.

As you can see there's massive difference in my speed tests and downloading speed between my afrigreen account and my web africa account.

Just last week my afrigreen account was working exactly like my web africa account so something clearly needs to be fixed.

thanks

Thanks for posting the results, but the speed is round about where it should be for a 6Mbps Business Uncapped account at the moment. Even if your line syncs higher than that, you won't really break the 6Mbps ceiling. Some of the Business Uncapped accounts were receiving higher speeds than they should have previously.

It's only been since the weekend that my speed test is like this. Last week and since I moved to Afrigreen speedtest always was about 8mbps. What reason would there be for web africa account to get better speed test than Afrigreen account? If I had a capped account would my speed test be better?

Also forgetting the speed test for a second my actual download speeds aren't good either (averaging 200-300kbps)

That page loads fine for me.

Yeah... Twitch.tv definitely has a bit of work to do, especially if you are using it via a web browser. The routing is a bit of a pain to nail down, as Twitch.tv seems to have multiple servers streaming the content, and these shift around depending on the channel.

Just for testing purposes on our side, were you running anything else on your connection?

Twitch still pretty much unusable since Friday. Constant buffering on medium and only using 600 kbit/s of my 20MB line. The CS major is one week away please lets get out ducks in a row before that. :(

Also it's just Twitch that is affected, YouTube runs perfectly on 1080p using 12000 kbit/s of the line.

Ah. So they don't have dedicated CDNs then. Fair enough. You'd think they would be using something like S3 CDNs or something since Amazon bought them.

Twitch works fine with other ISPs. Afrihost just can't get it right. Congested network means everything is slowed down so they have to prioritise traffic to prevent it getting caught up in the congestion. (Or we could just call it shaping)

Afrihost please don't blame Twitch for your short comings.

Not blaming Twitch.tv at all, I'm just saying that we're struggling in getting the routing nailed down. On AfriGreen issue definitely isn't because of bandwidth limitations, at the moment for example I can watch 1080p60 on Youtube without any buffering, but Twitch.tv buffers a lot on Medium quality. Conversely, using the Twitch.tv app on my phone lets me watch Source quality without any buffering either.

Well I read that differently to what you are saying. Either way still disagree that things should have to be prioritised to work correctly on an unshaped connection.

It has little to do with prioritizing the stream, but rather the routing to the actual server where the content is being streamed from.

I just find that hard to believe. Every other major ISP gets it right. However your POC network and main network can't. So I can test Internet Solutions and Vox and they have no problem. However MTN and Neotel can't work it out?

I'm happy to accept that there are problems like congestion that are being sorted out but this should never have to be a case of certain services needing to be optimised if it is an unshapped service.
What happens if I want to stream video from some arbitrary site. Now suddenly I have to let you guys know so it can be correctly optimised or routed?

I just get annoyed by the misinformation. Doesn't help that I have to sit with an FTP download going at 2% of my line speed.
