I'll probably be switching over to Afrihost next month, but I just want to find out, how is Gaming prioritized on the network?
At present I'm with Telkom and the pings on games are much, much worse than I was getting with MWEB a couple of months ago.

I know that gaming was prioritized on MWEB so I'm just interested to find out what its like on Afrihost.

Gaming is given highest priority on the network as a realtime service. In terms of capped or unshaped bandwidth, your own QoS will set the priority. But we give it the highest possible priority to ensure low latency gaming.

I am on business uncapped. Going very well. I noticed Afriman mentioned qos controls. Where is that?

We will still see some shaping being applied. Your downloads shouldn't be timing out though, there should be consistent data transfer but at a slower throughput rate.

Yeah so slow that they eventually timeout, takes about 3 minutes for a 100kb file to timeout

Was unshaped for 2 hours this morning now back to shaped to a standstill again

When I left this morning mine was unshaped. Not sure now but disappointing if that's the case. I just find it crazy that with Afri it's either full speed 400 kb/s or shaped and 10-15kb/s. Couldn't they shape at like 25% of the full speed? Is there no middle ground?

At this rate I'm seriously considering a move to Business Uncapped. AfriMan, your business accounts are completely prioritized and unshaped, correct?

Protocol Prioritisation is available via the ClientZone :) It's an optional shaping service that shapes down P2P.

Just out of curiousity, If i have a 10mbps account and am being shaped to 75% download and 75% p2p, does that mean that i am limited to 7.5mbps (due to the shaping). If my line only syncs at 7mbps, I assume i wouldn't feel this shaping. Is that correct?

Thanks

Was so happy when I first joined AfriHost, no shaping ever, not so much right now...

Guys with all due respect, the Afriteam are doing there best... Real time services are flying and are stable and shaping is only occurring mainly due to the demand the network is experiencing. Just be a little bit more patient, the IPC's will be upgraded with more capacity not long from now. Honestly Afrihost is terrific and there doing a splendid job, they can't be compared to other ISP's.

Not long from now the shaping will ease, just hang in there guys. :)

Just please bear in mind that nothing changed between the end of last year and now. We still have the same IPC in all regions until Telkom delivers the balance of our capacity as ordered.

Now that the bulk of users are returning to their normal online activities, shaping has to return to protect the network and deliver the best experience to users. It not a case of us changing policy or deciding to shape arbitrarily. We were able to shape less due to the decrease in demand over the holiday, but now we have shape as we have done previously until new capacity arrives.

This mainly in the North. While we're also seeing a lot more shaping in the South as well, it's a lot less severe :(

I'm talking about how it was back in August/September last year. I was rarely shaped back then and speeds were still around 100-200kB/s not 30kB/s

Also the best experience for your users you talk about is broken if I can't updates apps on my phone on a 10Mbps line, that's not the best that's f'ing broken

Like Afriman said, the IPC's are still getting more capacity that they ordered. Just a bit more patience sir

That should be correct, I don't trust my maths though ;)
These percentages display the percent available of your line speed for these services.

Thanks for the really positive message, it's much appreciated!
I know it frustrating, seeing the accounts being shaped - but as you say, we definitely are working on a solution to this and hope to see the bulk of shaping queries and concerns addressed son :)
