Back in PTA I'm running at 2Mb speeds (4Mb line)... this is all over the place.

Edit: That didn't last long, back down to 700kbps

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

Hasn't changed in nearly 24 hours. Steam Download says it's going to take 22 days.

Shaping Policy: 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P
I only used 100gb this month on my 10mb account, where I used 600gb last month without being shaped. Also Pretoria / Centurion area

That's because the network is under a fair bit of load today.
AfriGuy/Man did say that the shaping is not related to your usage, but rather to the network load. Your usage only means that when there is shaping, the heaviest users will get shaped first.

Yup. All the ISPs are having issues and MrBeep in OpenWeb thread just confirmed that due to iOS7 being released and everyone and their with an Apple device updating that things are a bit slow all round.

Give it a day or three and I expect things to be back to normal.

Same Here

Did about 110Gb's on my 2 meg line. Bit more than usual. Being shaped to 25% and 6.5%. Which would be fine if it was only during working hours. but the shaping is happening 24/7. Something is not happy. Also started about 3 days ago for me and I'm in Gauteng.

Steam is crawling along at 20Kb/s. Can't even update at all.

It's gonna be hard to reply to all the individual messages here, but I think I can address a few pages of comments in one post:-

We saw a huge increase in demand on the network yesterday, particularly during the peak usage time from around 8pm-ish to just before 11pm. We suspect that this was most likely to multiple Apple device updates and App updates running simultaneously, and everyone getting pretty much the same idea at the same time. I see we're hitting a pretty heavy usage curve this morning as well, but seems to be a lot less aggressive.

So remember that we only shape downloads and P2P. OS updates are not included in shaping. So we had to try to really put the screws on torrents and downloads to get usage to a level where overall latency and throughput was effected. Even pretty much everyone on Uncapped was shaped last night, we still had a massive demand on the network.

We're still seeing heavy demand this morning, possibly still related to iOS 7 as we saw many clients complaining that their downloads failed or showed errors due to the load on Apple's servers. We're doing everything we can to make sure that we provide the best overall experience while this is ongoing. Hopefully most will have their iOS fix by this evening.

We'll be monitoring closely so that we do everything possible from our side.

I don't buy the IOS7 explanation. The slowdowns started happening several days ago - the first complaints on this forum were on Monday 16th September. IOS7 was only available from 7pm last night (18 Sept).

10KB/s download speed right now. 2Mb line. WTF! :wtf:
Welcome to my world for the last 2 months straight! :(

It's irritating the hell out of me but I've had other things to worry about the last 2 months which is why i havent been very proactive in finding a solution.

Note, it's only NNTP downloads I am experiencing this with.

I'm taking specifically about last night. As I mentioned on a previous post, there is no general slowdown on the network. It's demand based, we're not making any changes on the network that is delivering less capacity than it did previously. When that capacity starts to fall under demand levels, then we have to shape.

I'm talking specifically about last night, and this morning.

So then you've had abnormally high demand since Monday?

I cannot believe it. 11am and shaped - oh well, I hope this blows over in the next few days

Good point, coupled with the iOS7 update - I am starting to see why the network is under load. Completely forgot about GTA

I think both IOS7 and steam use Akamai as their CDN?? I would imagine MTN business operates an Akamai node, in which case the impact should only be on the last few (local) hops??

Also shaped:

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

Will check it at home tonight.

Easy solution: Shape the Apple fanbois to at least 25% Why must we suffer because they want a new shiny OS?

Don't you cache downloads in order to prevent this?
