Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Dude, I understand you're just doing your job (which must suck at least a little at present), and you're just conveying what you can, but I frankly couldn't care less whether my connection was unshaped or not during the night.

Once my wife and I retire to bed for the night the only action on my connection would be the keep-alive pings from my router. Apart from a handful of times per year I don't schedule downloads during the night; it's just not how I use my connection to the 'web. What I do download I do either because of necessity - as much as any download can be such - or on a whim. As has been stated a few times, your home uncapped account has seen to my whims being met for a bloody long time, and I just want to get back to liking Afrihost again. :(

The product is still the same, we haven't changed the rules or the workings of the account. We didn't change anything. However, we did always say that Uncapped was semi-shaped and shaped by capacity, so there was always a possibility that there could be shaping at any time if there is excessive demand. Again, we still never throttled connections (as we did in the past and some ISPs still do) and we offered Turbocharge to alleviate shaping when needed. I think this is still an excellent value product. We turn the network over to clients with the rules in place, and clients determine the demand (and hence the shaping).

There are also other unshaped products that can deliver an "on-demand" experience if you don't want to be subject to shaping or demand on the network. I think when you view all our products, we cover just about every possible requirement.

Your product might not have changed - I don't think I've insinuated that I thought it did - but SOMETHING changed dramatically on Thursday morning last week, and the experience hasn't been the same since. And, to repeat myself once more, I honestly don't mind the odd bit of reasonable daytime shaping... or having the bejeesus shaped out of torrents. But having HTTP downloads shaped to below 20% of line-speed at 22:30 at night should not be regarded as acceptable, by me or you.

It not what intend to be a normal experience. We are still analyzing and investigating traffic patterns to pick out trends that we can mitigate, and we currently have a team of external experts that we've hired to help us improve overall experience.

We hope to have this pinned down as quickly as possible :(

More smoke and mirrors? You have been trying to put this one to bed now for 2 weeks +, I left Mweb to join AH to get away from this type of thing, find myself questioning whether or not i did myself in or not? The guys at my work with MWEB at presen (whom i am trying to convince to join AH) actually say they are chugging along fine.

I agree, shape my torrents till 12am, but I have work to do and game updates to download before then. So leave me downloads alone.. :)

I am permanently shaped @ 6.25%, overall the experince barring signing up, has been less than satisfactory. Dunno why i listened to friends who recommended ah. Cant even play bf3 as i loose connection to ea most prob cos my ping is so high.

It's never based on individual usage, i.e. it's not punitive. Our system calculates how many users (starting from the heaviest for each product tier) will need to be shaped to reclaim the bandwidth required to bring usage in line. But this can never be 100% guaranteed to work. Some users may be idle, some may not be using much bandwidth on current services, or there could be high bandwidth on protocols that we don't shape (like OS updates). So it reviews the amount of capacity and continues to increase shaping by number of clients and policy until we see usage back into our comfort zone - which is maximum bandwidth usage without risk of latency and high contention (and slow throughput). It means that if demand is excessive enough, we could shape any client to control usage.

Our aim to shape as few people as possible, as little as possible, for the shortest possible period - while giving the maximum amount of capacity we have available to clients.

I'm a little confused to be honest :o From the figures that other people have posted on this thread, it seems like our shaping has been consistently stricter than everyone else's by at least a few percentage points. I'm struggling to understand why, considering that I've seen users of lower-tier products being shaped less, even though they've pulled more data than us.

Are you saying that everyone experiencing shaping on a 10MB line is being shaped to 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P like we are, or that different users within the same product tier will be shaped at different rates depending on their usage? If it's the latter, that would suggest that we are amongst the heaviest of 10MB account users at 215GB usage, which doesn't seem like much at all (considering we were pulling 160GB on a low month with 1MB MWeb uncapped).

This is starting to like like a viable option. I'm off to the @lantic thread to read their comments.
I must say it looks like I might go the same route, pity I so wanted to come over to Afrihost.

I would just like to know from the AfriTeam ne. Battlefield 4 Beta is coming out on the 1st of October. Will I be able to download that at normal speed, cause if I can't then I am really going to be pissed off!! Might just convince me to take my money elsewhere!!

You are more than welcome to download it...........at 25% of the normal speed due to unknown, unexpected reasons we are experiencing high usage rates on the network we are working on resolving it and will let you know when we feel like it. You are most welcome to watch youtube vidoes of your friends playing it though.

Please ensure you pay us in full 100% for your subscription. You may not shape your payment due to high demand on your wallet

I must say I will probably be downloading the BF4 beta on my ps4 and xbox360 so yah... be prepared afripeople... that demand is going to be high all round (although im not sure if there are as many battlefield players as iphone users, but then again the beta will be larger than ios7)

Your download will be choked to 25% or 18% so if you start on 01 October to dl bf4 please ensure you have enough prepaid electrcity to ensure your device can stay on for the entire month to complete yordownlaod under the heavy strain our network is under.

By eh time you finish downloading the beta, bf10 on playstation 9 will be out already.....sory folks but it has become a joke now might as well join the circus.
