Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

Like many people posting, I've been shaped terribly from about 8am to about midnight for the last 2 weeks - including today. The rhetoric has been:
subscriber: I'm being shaped all the time; Afrihost's network isn't working
Afriman: Our network is working fine; it's designed to shape you

Whether your network is working or not is a function of subscribers' expectations. Afrihost is simply shaping far beyond what subscribers (me included) think is reasonable. I'm steering clear of the whole "then moved to business uncapped if you don't want shaped" conversation. Bottom line is performance is far less than expectation.

Last I read Afrihost was still trying to determine exactly what the problem was - something like "hold thumbs - we're sure things will get better soon" - well I think subscribers need more details. More than a shot in the dark.

I can't remember - has Afrihost acknowledged there is a problem? What's your plan to solve it - what's your plan B to solve it?

We know that not having information can be frustrating. I wish I had more to share. We still do not know what the upsurge was caused by. There was definitely an iOS 7 surge in usage but it just didn't go away. We're definitely seeing improvement, but it's still far from ideal. For now we are optimising and even trying to force the network to give as much bandwidth as we can squeeze out without compromising performance, well out of our 'comfort zone'. We have some long term proposals in motion as well, and hopefully I'll be able to share more details about those very soon.

With this in mind...

Why not create a 20GB + 20GB product like TelkomInternet?

A daytime cap that allows unmetered traffic between say midnight and 8AM

It could be an option for the future, but we'll always like simplicity of anytime data. We don't like the idea of forcing anyone to use data between certain time - we'd rather incentivise it in some way. We don't like the stick, in other words, we prefer the carrot (dipped in honey and covered in sugary goodness) :)

Still shaped, how can I be shaped for a full 5 days? Why are some people not shaped yet I Still am? Getting tired of having a 4mb internet connection that downloads like dialup! My patience is being tested

Sorry that you are still experiencing shaping. We are seeing more clients unshaped today. Let's hope this will be much more relaxed over the weekend. Not promising - but optimistic :)

I'll run some more tests on my side. Might be becuase I'm using a 10Mbps account. Will see if I can test with a 4Mbps account and get it working :(

Thank you Afriman! Appreciate the effort to sort everyone out.

If I could see that everything was slow...youtube, dl's and twitch...then cool. I'd know sometbing else was up. But having two out of the three running near perfect and twitch sucking that hard is a bit suspect :p

I've seen a few hiccups with Twitch in the past, and it seems to have rectified itself without us making any changes so I'm not sure whether it's due to how their service runs, or something we haven't discovered yet. But I'll keep testing :)

I have to agree with Afriman on this one. A great reason to join Afrihost is that they offer ADSL without any catches (such as time limits on data). This makes them the great company they are.

Afriman, still struggling with my 10Mb Business and not getting throughput. Testing the line looks fine but the experience is terriable and I'm only seeing 2-4Mbps throughput even though synching at 9Mbps

Usually my twitch runs fine but today it has been terrible. Can't even stream on low quality it's really annoying, tried 2 other isp account and both run twitch fine. I am also battling with international browsing and other steam activities and there is no shaping on my account (4mb normal).

Only reason I suggested it was I'd rather have X amount of gigs that I know will work reliably when I need them. Let's say 40GB, as TelkomInternet. If I want to fetch a particular file via torrent/news servers on a time constraint then I may do so... however the bulk of my network utilization which may be considered "unattended/non-live" traffic can occur between 00:00 and 08:00.

I used to be on MWEB 2mbps uncapped.....streamed Netflix fine at 480p (but I couldn't much else on the line when doing it).

so I thought...hey! let me move to afrihost 4mbps! then I can watch Netflix AND game at the same time??? double throughput right?? WROOONG!!!

well let me tell you...my afrihost 4mbps account cannot stream 480p like the 2mbps could :/ buffer, buffer, buffer and that's with NOTHING else happening on the line....where is the 4mbps????

VERY UNHAPPY!!!! even when told that services like this specifically are not shaped (i'm not a downloader)..I have been with afrihost for a few days and I will be putting in my cancellation Monday....back to MWEB for me.

THERE IS A REASON YOU PAY MORE FOR MWEB GUYS!!! IT JUST A BETTER SERVICE!

have you tried PMing afriman /afriguy or phone afrihost support?

my connection is perfect atm... I'm streaming 480p with minimal buffering on a 1mbps line... and this isnt even the business uncapped...

I had speed issues too when I had my account, seems AH is a bit iffy in Cape Town. I was told they are working on the issue though so maybe just PM one of the reps.

I am also not on business uncapped.....

at this point I am just annoyed...I specifically asked if these types of services were run at full speed and the answer was yes...

I switch over to mweb and its great, back to afrihost and it sucks badger balls...

so right now...im probably not in the best frame of mind to talk to a representative...lol

Having the same problem. Netflix is terrible tonight. Here is a speedtest result: only 1.14mbs on a 10mb link? Nothing else downloading. Router shows less than 1.5mbs download activity.

Test Date: Oct 4, 2013 7:26 PM
Download: 1.14 Mbps
Upload: 0.83 Mbps
Ping: 15 ms
Server: Randburg
External IP: 105.xxx.xxx.xxx
Internal IP: 192.xxx.xxx.xxx

Only my second month with Afrihost... perhaps my last one.

Just order their 3g sim only package. I think I need to cancel that order.

..and insult to injury .. submitted a support ticket more than 4 hours ago with no response....

They should advertise this product as a 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P account, since thats what I see most of the time

still not seeing any shaping. but then again I've only done about 5gb this month :)
