Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

We know that not having information can be frustrating. I wish I had more to share. We still do not know what the upsurge was caused by. There was definitely an iOS 7 surge in usage but it just didn't go away. We're definitely seeing improvement, but it's still far from ideal. For now we are optimising and even trying to force the network to give as much bandwidth as we can squeeze out without compromising performance, well out of our 'comfort zone'. We have some long term proposals in motion as well, and hopefully I'll be able to share more details about those very soon.

what you're saying:
* there was a bandwidth upsurge
* linked to ios updates
* we're squeezing every last drop out of our network
* can't give you more information

Given where we're at, I think giving us more information is exactly what you need to do. I don't think you realise this is a crisis. It's a shocker to have been shaped for so long (in my case from the 17th September). Unacceptable.

You're demonstrating no confidence in fixing the crisis - other than waiting for bandwidth consumption to decrease? Is that really your plan - hoping the problem will fix itself? It hasn't fixed itself in the last 20 days.

edit: forgot to mention - from 8h30 this morning (Saturday!!) - Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 25% P2P

I downloaded that at full speed during the week. (Even though I was shaped 25/12.5)
Good to know :) something is slowing mine down :( only getting 40kb/s going to take 24 hours :/

Edit: So I figured out why.... There's another bandwidth hog in the family :/

Purchasing more capacity isnt something they can do on the spot (as far as I know). So if they did run out of capacity.. the only alternative is to shape...

It sure beats not having ANY internet

My shaping hasnt seen lower than 75/75. so i dont see a problem here... just an upsurge in usage.

My router refuses to login. Tried rebooting it. No go. Switched to a different account/provider, no problem.

Tried calling Afrihost; got the "our lines are too busy crap, send an sms to whatever and we will call you back sometime this year" message.

What's going on guys? Authentication is not working. your website says everything is fine??

Ok, now I know you guys say you do not shape the business uncapped accounts. But please explain the below then..

So could you please enlighten me as to why my downloads are not going over 100kb/s seeing as I am supposed to ALWAYS get my full line speed. I moved over from the home uncapped account to this account to run away from your pathetic shaping on the home uncapped package. Now it seems like I have a similar situation on the business uncapped account. But without you notifying me in the ClientZone?? I am on the 2mb uncapped account. Until last night my speeds have exceeded 200kb/s, but now it will not come close to 100kb/s.. Very strange indeed.

Afriman, still struggling with my 10Mb Business and not getting throughput. Testing the line looks fine but the experience is terriable and I'm only seeing 2-4Mbps throughput even though synching at 9Mbps

Sorry to hear that. My own tests showed normal throughput on Business, but please drop me PM so I can check this out with you :(

Usage is fairly moderate at the moment (for daytime) so throughput should really be awesome. I'll run some tests on my side to see what I get. Also, please test using the Telkom Guest account (guest@telkomadsl password guest) and run a speedtest on saix.net. Always a good check to see if your account is under-performing.

This is the first time in a very long time that I've been shaped on a Saturday, this is ridiculous, get this sorted out Afrihost

We're not having general authentication problems, but drop me your username in a PM and I'll check it our on our side :(

Correct, purchasing IPC capacity is a long term process and can take months to put in place. There need to be case studies and motivations drawn up, and this is during Telkom's proposed network upgrades across the country. As much as we would love to write a cheque, our first priority has to be to improve and optimise the current performance so that we deliver the best experience, until a long term solution becomes viable.

Aaaah, the old torrenting in secret story - block their MAC address on the router ;) (Just kidding - don't do that, sharing is caring)

Strange, shaping is very light right now, except maybe for Gauteng which is just slightly more than everywhere else.

Which region are you in? Drop me a PM so I can see what policy you're on :(

I'm also being shaped badly, I live right next to the Benmore exchange and my supposed to be 10Mb is at 3.5Mb...WTF
