Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

(crosspost from another less relevant thread)

I have a 10 mbit Uncapped bundle from Afrihost.

I've downloaded 14.62 GB this month, average of 3.66 GB per day, yet I'm shaped to 12.5% download / 6.25%.

Torrents are at 20kb/sec, Hearthstone keeps on d/c'ing every 20 minutes - it's just totally ludicrous how borked Hearthstone is.

A 10mbit line can, at peak, download ~108 GB a day. So I'm using ~3.39% of that, and I'm getting shaped (in a very significant way) - it just doesn't seem fair.

If, as the Afrihost rep says above, that the volume is too high on the network, then the most logical solution is to get more bandwidth on the underlying MTN network to handle it. The other logical solution is just to disincentivize new customers for a period of time. Surely if you have a finite supply of bandwidth, and you have very very low pricing (i.e. high demand), then you're just making it even worse for your existing customers by allowing more people on the network. I'm not saying you should completely stop new customers from joining, but maybe removing some ludicrous specials might slow down rate of new customers.

I see AfriGuy already answered this - but just to add - capacity on the MTN backbone is not an issue whatsoever. Our "capacity" is determined by how fact we can break out of Telkom's network onto our network, which is set by the IPC capability. So what we're really upgrading is the bridge from Telkom's network to our network, which will allow traffic to flow more freely. Once you're on our MTN network, you're flying on high-grade fibre all the way!! :)

With regard to discouraging more business, we need all our clients, old and new, light and heavy users, to motivate for the extra capacity. And at the end of the day we still need to grow as a company. We can't turn away the clients today that will justify the upgrades and pricing drops that will benefit everyone tomorrow.

Hope that makes sense :)

my account has been flying over the weekend and again tonight. awesome stuff :D

unfortunately RICA only allows you customers with an address and identification so pooches can't sign up ....

;)

[it was either that or a PE IPC comment ...]

I think it's a bit sad that you feel the need to register a different account simply to goad and stir, frankly. We know there's strain on all systems, and for you to deem yourself entitled to full speed downloads 24/7 at the cost of everyone else is deplorable.

I hope your cables get stolen.

LOL :D

My Aunt phoned Afrihost to check if the prices would drop, and they told her only early next year. :( I don't know if she was correct, she's pretty computer illiterate :D

Crimen what?

Naam Skending / Crimen Injuria [ˈkraɪmən ɪnˈdʒʊərɪə]

n
(Law) South African Law an action that injures the dignity of another person, esp use of racially offensive language

if they published the description such as to name a little old granny then maybe
but the conduct really is within the scope of insult to person of a barely civil nature and even there barely

what would be quite imaginative would be to go the cease and desist and interdict route - I am not advocating such a course for want of exceeding a de minimus standard, but it is more than of a little academic interest to me

Of course, but still... would be interesting if it was viable.

Sorry about this, not sure where the info is coming from :(
We don't have a confirmed date on when we'll have this announced (for the automatic Telkom line upgrades) but we will have something announced soon.

4mb account. Again...come the evening my speeds go from 390kB to this. NO CONGESTION. 2nd and 3rd hops have 10ms pings.

My line is with you guys...sent Afriman and TelkomZA a pm. HAve this sorted out please. What good is a 4mb account if I cannot use when I am actually home?

And that speed is on youtube btw as well. Peaking at 110kB. Been going on for weeks and even my patience is wearing a little thin right now...

Enough is enough, got a secure VPN service to run my P2P through so I can also join the top abusers list on the webpage.

P2P currently cruising along at 1MB/s

This is why I have suggested simply cancelling ppl's accounts. *facepalm*

This is what I am getting while trying to watch youtube on a 4mb account right now.

Look at that and tell me there is NOT a limiter set up somewhere.

No spikes...no up and down throughput. Flat stable 1mb speeds.

Hey guys, can you use your account on a different landline? How do you change the landline number to the new one? thanks

lol nvm : Uncapped DSL Accounts are locked to a single phoneline. The phoneline it gets locked to is the first line used to connect. If your number changes simply contact us to clear the current number. - See more at:

Congestion is killing my Internet!

For the most part, between 08:00 and 18:00 2nd hop is around 10ms and then at night it's like this:

Tracing route to afrihost.com [197.242.144.102]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 2 ms 1 ms 192.168.0.201
2 561 ms 674 ms 584 ms 105-236-?-??-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.?.??]
3 678 ms 941 ms 1223 ms ipc-recieve-tb-2a.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.54.86]
4 * 539 ms 414 ms tb-dca-2.za--qux-c.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.198.188]
5 708 ms 557 ms 576 ms compj-cpt-1.mtnns.net [196.44.18.2]
6 729 ms 633 ms 695 ms ct-cr-2.za--tb-cr-1.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.134]
7 525 ms 488 ms 637 ms rb-cr-1.za--ct-cr-2.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.69]
8 366 ms 406 ms 411 ms jh-dca-2.za--jh-cr-1.za-a.mtnns.net [196.44.0.221]

Is there any chance of getting Telkom to move my line to another port?
