Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

What area you in sir? The shaping will definitely ease a bit due to more live capacity that will take in effect soon. No ETA is given yet as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, when we have installed new capacity nationally we should see some improvement.

We're seeing pretty heavy usage on all three regions at the moment - we may see a brief rise in latency as we try to control this.

Not sure what is causing this sudden spike this morning. Any ideas?

@Afriman

Im currently on Openweb Gold 2mb uncapped. How they operate is typically no downloads possible during 8am-5pm, there after pretty much fullspeed on all protocols and no throttling based on overall usage.

With us being bumped to 4mb soon, OW is gonna be too expensive for the 4mb option. Can you tell me what you guys typically do with regards to shaping and throttling? PM if need be, thx

We don't throttle any of our DSL - we shape only when the network is experiencing high demand. We do give you 5 Free Turbocharge sessions a month to bypass shaping whenever you'd like (and you can topup your Turbocharge sessions at any time in ClientZone)

We never shape realtime services like browsing, gaming, streaming, VoIP and terminal services like SSH.

k , thx for the feedback

Looks to be mostly a Windows update from what I can see - was not aware that there was a new update releasing today :(

Looks like it's probably a lot of office computers doing automatic updates :(
Don't you have a transparent proxy that caches these updates?

would still have to use local TELKOM IPC bandwidth , which is where the issue is .

There is more then enough international bandwidth.

But i hope they do have a proxy for it

MS releases their updates every 2nd Tuesday of the month, every month and has been doing so for many many years.

Windows, Office, Server (All flavours eg. Windows, Exchange, SQL, etc.), Surface, Drivers etc.

It would still use bandwidth either way, unless our cache nodes or CDN's were before the IPC - which they can't be. It only really serves to save on international bandwidth.

Also depends on how the content is allowed to be cached. Apple don't allow any caching of updates :(

Very good to know - honestly did not know this :erm:

I have been upgraded to 10mbs at my exchange that only supports 4mb ;)

Hi chaps,

This may not *technically* be an Afrihost question but I am hoping someone here will know the answer. I have been told that there is a Telkom Network Freeze during December so they won't be upgrading the 1meg product at that time. Does that mean that they won't be installing new lines during that time either? I am moving to a new flat on 1/2 December, and I want to put in ADSL. Will I need to wait until January? Thanks for the help :)

Yes, there is a network freeze so nothing Telkom related happens during that time (it's around mid-december to early Jan). Telkom have given us start dates for each product upgrade but the chances are that all lines are going to be in the process of upgrading until possibly Feb 2014. Judging by the previous years - this would be a good bet.

Telkom have said that orders placed after 25 November will be for new speeds on all lines.

Do you think if I sneakily order the ADSL product on the 30th of November I'll get it installed in December before the freeze? :P
