Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

To me, there is no difference between throttling and shaping, especially when shaping is so bad that you are unable to use your service after hours (between 6pm and midnight). There is a logical difference, but not in the results.

There is a huge difference between the two, I think it's been debated like crazy around these parts ;)

Well the odd thing is youtube pulls 3mbps when I monitor the stream on winbox, but it buffers constantly. Youtube is forced on 360p.

What's your latency like? Streaming needs fairly stable and consistent latency - maybe that's where the issues are coming in.

I'll follow up with AfriMan :)

Thanks AfriGuy, you're a champ. Also tell Afriman that I did not bother to post a video test with a critical account since it worked flawlessly compared to my 4mbps home uncapped. So I saw no point in it. :)

We aren't seeing any weird shaping here, Nowvideo is also unshaped :)
Drop me a PM and we can troubleshoot the YouTube issues you're seeing.

I did not know that Afrihost 1Mb Business Account actually means 0.6Mb to 0.7Mb only. That is according to Afrihost Support responding to my email. Cancelled my account with them today. Why not give me what you advertise? Even worse, the troubleshooting method, is to blame whoever I got my ADSL line from.

Erm... Overheads mean you won't ever see the full line speed, regardless of ISP. 1mb lines and accounts will give sustained throughput of about that, just as 10mb lines and accounts will show throughput of around 8 or 8.5mb/s.

This is due to overheads. If you want that full 1Mbs get your line to sync at 2Mbs. No ISP can give you exactly 1Mbs regardless of what's advertised as long as your line is syncing at 1Mbs.

I have a 4Mb line that got capped on a TI 10Mb account (250GB or something). Wanted to get 1Mbps access to have a useful alternative to the capped speed. The capped TI speed is not really far off with speed from the 1Mb business account

Throttling is definitely not something we want to look into. It's definitely an easy answer to some issues, but it's a pretty hard sell to our clients. And is just isn;t the kind of experience we want to provide.

Remember that we're only seeing some intermittent problems that seem to have cropped up as demand has started to peak. When we get our full capacity delivered, things should really be very different experience wise.

When are you guys getting the capacity? It's been months now, if telkom does not give, start suing for breaching contract and see them work.

We've received our provision capacity already and seeing good results, are you still experiencing issues?

AfriMan states that you are still awaiting capacity and AfriGuy says you have it already. I'm confused.

As many mentioned, this would be due to overheads on DSL. 0.6 to 0.7Mbps would be average. If you are getting the same speeds on a 4Mbps account, there could be an issue on the line, or with the account you're testing with.

I'd recommend signing up a Free GB account, so you can test full line speed on a Capped Unshaped account.

We did receive a partial upgrade, but we're still expecting a lot more capacity to be delivered for the South and the North.

After overheads, 1Mbps would still normally get results of between 0.85-0.9Mbps anyways, mine always did. Even 2Mbps syncs at 1.75Mbps, which is about 0.875Mbps when you divide it by 2. So something could still be up on his side.

And no, you cannot be happy with losing "only" 0.15/0.2Mbps, since you're still paying for that bit.
