Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

That may have been the case when we were having data centre problems, but all should be proper now.

Do you use static DNS assignment or dynamic (from ISP)? If you're using dynamic, you should be able to resolve on all sites. If not, please post some traceroutes here so I can take a look (and please mark which ones are tested using which DNS). If that's a bit too much to paste on a forum (not always image friendly) please drop me a mail on [email protected].

I've been using dynamic, which assigns 196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9 for DNS. I've manually set Google's public DNS as a temporary workaround.

www.gerbergear.com is one of the sites that doesn't resolve at the moment

When using 196.7.7.7:
nslookup
> www.gerbergear.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 196.7.7.7

This is definitely related to DNS on 196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9

I've been able to browse the site OK using our DNS servers, if you're still having problems with this could you drop me a PM please?

So again, Google and Youtube streaming is just plain poop and the uncapped account is stuck at 80kbps no matter what I try download (news server is stuck at 2kbps, driver download is 80kbps, etc). I switch to a prepaid account and full line speed so what gives this time?

Google services, unless it's downloads from Drive, etc, should not be shaped as a realtime service, but sounds like other services might be shaped. Also, if you're running multiple shaped services at the same time they are going to content with each other within that, so I think one can expect them to be slow.

You can turbocharge to unshape your connection. By switching to an unshaped prepaid, you are effectively doing the same thing as turbocharge.

The funny here is, from 4am when I was having all this crap, there was no shaping active. Oh and btw, all the TC are gone, 3 wasted just doing stupid AH tests ....... the same ones we get asked to provide over and over and over and over.

We'll definitely credit back any TurboCharge sessions that you used during the testing.

Which web browser were you using when you had the issue with Google and Chrome?

Was using Chrome, got frustrated so switched to Firefox and the frustration did not ease.

it has gotten slightly better but the minute I stop using it and switch to the Mweb or WA prepaid, the difference is amazing so it's definitely related to the uncapped account for me.

Huh... That's definitely off, which DNS is your modem set to us? Could you check if using 196.7.7.7 with 8.8.8.8 makes and difference to your connection experience.

So 450+ ping ingame while account is shaped is happening again. You guys seriously need to fix all this - shaping gaming and streaming and the endless BS with anything Google is basically killing the service. Oh to have proper consumer activism in this country to hold people accountable.

P.S - I'm not going into my modem and messing with DNS again, I fell for that before and all it did was cause me headaches and the same issues just carried on being issues.

Which game exactly is it that you are having problems with? And can you please send me a PM with your ADSL username and a number you can be contacted on, I want our Critical Care Team to contact you to figure out exactly what is going on.

I'm having a strange issue,

Whenever I upload anything on my line (whether at 20KBps or 80KBps), my ping to any outside server jumps by over 4000ms. Would this be my router? Or my line?

That is definitely a tricky one... It could be the line or the ADSL modem. One thing that we should check first, is the MTU setting on your ADSL modem, and ideally speaking that should be set to 1492.

Do you perhaps have a spare modem that you could test with as well?

Not really going to bother getting my blood pressure up about it because I'm leaving but is AH ever going to try figure out the deal with Chrome and YouTube using an AH account or is it like 'meh whatever' ?

I'm not sure this is something that's an issue on our end :(
We've seen good results from clients using these settings:

For those of you having trouble with Google services and Chrome:

open a new tab and go to chrome://flags/
Find "Experimental QUIC protocol."
Set it to "Disabled" instead of "Default"

Boom, Google services working again. This was driving me nuts the past few days, and appears to be related to Google switching this protocol on for their services and having it enabled by default in Chrome. Not sure what the benefit is supposed to be, but clearly something's buggy with it right now and disabling it has no negative effects.

Ping was just below 300 before 7am ....... shaping kicked in not long after and ping is sitting at just below 500. That means you do shape gaming and after being contacted by 'critical care' and being told you don't shape gaming, I'm over it. Just counting down the days.

This is cringe worthy -

Admittedly the other ISP's are also whack at the moment but not that whack. What gives AH?

We definitely don't shape gaming, so I'm pretty sure that is not the cause. Also, remember that shaping relates to throughput, not latency. The whole idea behind shaping is to preserve latency at all time for gaming and other realtime services.

Are you measuring this latency in-game or on your general connection?
