:(

The latency issue this morning was pretty bad. Has there been any improvement? There should have been a lot of improvement.

I have been having issues with Afrihost for about 3 months now. I'm on a 4mb uncapped line and I must say I was extremely happy for a long time, until Feb. I have posted on here and support a few times but none of the suggestions have worked. Done everything from tracert, flushDNS, port reset, Telkom checking line, Telkom checking exchange, testing on different accounts etc and my internet still sucks. One day browsing works fine, but everything else doesn't. The next nothing works and on other days everything is perfectly normal. I wont even go into the generic copy and paste responses I get from AH when I deal with them.

P2P goes at about 20kb/s if I am lucky (doesn't matter what time of day - especially the past month), if I try to browse at the same time nothing works at all. Youtube takes about 2-3 minutes to load up, strangely though videos will play one day and the next it takes about 10 minutes to watch a minute long video. Today though, youtube is impossible to use. It doesn't even load images for the videos and plays at 120p after buffering for a few minutes.

I have tried a CrystalWeb test account and everything seems well so I would assume it is an Afrihost issue. Since Telkom removed the ability to reset ports my line has been at 3071kbps. Latency in games is horrible and I haven't been able to play online properly. In ESO as an example I get anything from 300 - 999+ depending on time of day. 300 is still okay for me but damn, if anyone else tries to use the internet at the same time for anything, you can forget any of us getting joy. Another example, google mail takes at least 2-5 minutes just to open up to the point where you can see your emails. We are 3 people who use the line so you can imagine the frustration when we are trying to work. Hosting is another nightmare, as I cannot even edit my sites and AH has thus far been unable to assist with general issues.

I am seriously considering the cancellation of my account with Afrihost.

Just as an example here is a recent international speed test

Not too bad you say, but still not what I am paying for. This however, is not a true reflection of my actual usage experience. At that speed I should be able to browse or stream at the very least, but even this proves to be a challenge.

Evening!

It definitely sounds like you have not had a great experience recently. I definitely want to try and see if I can help you.

I am going to need a bit of extra information however, such as which web browser you generally use. Which DNS your modem is set to use. By ESO, I'm assuming you mean Eldar Scrolls online?

Good evening, not terrible.. just frustrating.

Usually use google Chrome, I have heard that there were issues from another AH rep regarding Chrome (dont know if this was resolved) DNS set to automatic and yes ESO is Elder Scrolls Online

EDIT

Also just thought to use IE to see if it is the Chrome issue. Youtube works perfectly now... apologies for that part then. I would then assume my browsing woes are due to chrome. Have tested and browsing/streaming is perfect again, so I humbly retract those statements from my previous post.

However, this doesn't explain the P2P or Gaming, atm I think I am shaped 18%. Does that mean I get 18% of total speed or reduced by 18% ?

Unfortunately it's still above 450 ingame whereas others are at the 255 mark ....... no gaming possible

Shaping percentage is what you get (approximately) and only on that particular service (e.g P2P). Definitely not shaping on gaming, but easiest way to test is to Turbocharge. But do note that you need to test with ONLY games running. No P2P (even just having the client open, as it hold the ports open for P2P) or anything else. The issue might be that if you are running multiple services (with shaped services) QoS may introduce some latency, and turbocharging will remove that, but not actually indicate that the gaming traffic is being shaped.

There is definitely something weird with Chrome. When we've tested service like Netflix also perform poorly on Chrome and much better on say FireFox.

Definitely horrible for gaming. We're still working to reduce the high P2P demand we're seeing during that period, and we are still seeing a rise in latency over peak :(

account went unshaped at almost 2am (ridiculous in itself) and the ping went down. It's pretty damn coincidental that when there is no shaping, gaming is fine ;)

Are you absolutely that there is no P2P running somewhere on your network or a PC has a torrent client open?

100% sure ...... everything gets closed, I have no torrent clients installed and I even turn wifi off when I game. When shaping was relaxed, streaming and gaming got a lot smoother. Not coincidence in my opinion.

We definitely don't want to shape gaming or streaming and I'm confident that this is not the case. I've been with the team testing this specifically on Capped accounts fully shaped with only gaming running, even multiple users on a 4Mbps Account (on 6Mbps line) and they tested different titles while shaped and running Teamspeak. I am 100% confident that gaming is not shaped.

So we'll need to determine why this would be different to your experience. Demand on the network would decrease significantly after 10pm (generally) so my expectation is that gaming would improve then, and not as late as 2am when there is probably the least amount of traffic on the network.

The Chrome problem is related to Afrihost (even thought they don't want to admit it). I use Chrome with my other ISP's and it works perfectly.

From what I've seen, a few services and products seem to suffer from similar issues on Chrome :( I know we've had some extensive testing done on this, but haven't been able to pinpoint anything from our end that causes the issues.

Well all i can say is its intermittent (without me changing any settings) and i've experienced zero issues on Telkom and Web Africa, so everything points to you guys. Forgive me if i put zero faith in MTN's "extensive testing".

It hasn't only been MTN's testing though, our team have been looking into this since it was brought up here.
If there was something we could tweak, change or turn on/ off - we would :)

Hey Afriguy

Can you confirm that Afrihost throttle sites with the word 'torrent' in their URL? I was looking at an article about torrent piracy (and it torrent in its url), and the page just wouldn't load. I tested it on my work internet (CrystalWeb) and it loaded in a flash.

I thought it was strange, so I gave it a test. And I found that none of the sites I tried, that had the word 'torrent' would load up. (such as torrentz.eu, quicktorrent.io). Yet, they load up perfectly on other ISPs.

I just find it a weird that you shape P2P programs (which is fine), but also shape sites with the word torrent in it. It feels so random!

Nope, no such thing on our network. Not even sure throttling based on keywords exists? Anyway.
Shaping is run on the network, but is done based on the overall demand of the network, and is done based on protocols and packet signatures.

Browsing any sites, whether torrent, P2P etc related - won't be shaped, as it's HTTP.
