Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Not everyone in the North is being shaped, and the shaping looks to ease quite nicely and fairly quickly after hours.

Thats interesting then. Is shaping now working how much you download now? I have had a heavy start to March, so I'm guessing that it might it. I will have a look at my shaping after 7 tonight to see if it has eased up.

Not at all. We saw heavier shaping in the South before we ran this promotion.
I think what they're saying is that the promotion then went ahead, despite of the shaping.
You can't really blame people for being annoyed. Massive shaping issues due to capacity, then all the extra unshaped bandwidth being handed out despite of it. Of course people are going to be up in arms.

Anybody else getting fluctuating and low speeds on speed tests recently?

Go check your Afrihost account. Most likely like most of us, you are being shaped.

I'm on business uncapped. Both my business and capped accounts are yielding the same result. Switch to Telkom guest account and its 100%.

If speed test doesn't even work correctly, what am I paying for?
Oh and YouTube is shocking atm.

That's what we've been trying to tell Afrihost - realtime services such as YouTube are bad regardless of shaping level, and it is NOT an individual issue. Many people have this problem.

I got an email from AH stating shaping is linked to previous download trends. Will post in the morning

I have a 4Mbps line.

I had a 2Mbps Business account with Afrihost. That means that the max speed I get is 2Mbps, regardless of the fact that my line speed is double that.

I thought a few days ago, well, the northern part did get extra capacity, so I switched to the normal 4Mbps uncapped Afrihost account. Reason, that all the times with shaping, when I get more than 50% of my line speed, I would "score", and of course the full speed for real time stuff, like me watching the Oscar trial etc.

It worked out at a loss. Http downloads went down to 18%. That is less than 1/4 of line speed. That is less than 1/2 of 1Mbps on a 4Mbps line. My frustration when downloading documents, multiplied by 1000.

I also realised that when the shaping got that severe, the connection became unstable. I had to frequently restart downloads, websites did not load the first time, downloads were corruped etc.

I am now back on the 2Mbps uncapped business and use another provider's capped account when I really need the speed.

The normal uncapped is 110% for real time speeds, but for downloads, like downloading a backup of a website or a photo album, or even documents like maps, android updates etc, the normal uncapped is, sorry for the word, ueseless.

The normal uncapped is piss poor for use during business hours, but after hours, it sometimes shines.

My 2 cents.

Still sitting on 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P after 10pm. I see people are getting download 'trends' excuse again.

I guess this means the iPhone has a new operating system. They better shape us in the ground for the next few months just to make sure everyone gets the upgrade ;)

Worse part of all of this, is when you look at the afrihost website, all there statuses are working 'as intended'. It is so frustrating!

Not great to hear :(
Doesn't sound like our shaping would be causing this, possibly a deeper issue at hand here. When you can, please paste up a traceroute here so we can take a look at where any potential issues are coming in.

Update and line situation: Fixed.
Alright so I posted the traceroute, but no one responded :erm:
So I went onto clientzone and recreated ports, everything is going 100% super smooth again. Hmm, I wonder what causes a problem like this?

So ye, all is fixed. Clientzone is pretty amazing. If I had this problem with MWEB, I'd be sitting on the phone...

shaped to the point where i am downloading from websites at 8kb/s on a 4meg line....

time to look for another provider...being shaped for the benefit of others while I'm not even a power user doesn't sit well with me.

I already pay higher taxes so people can get electricity for free....

So that means it is not according to the network load? Interesting...

This is what they send to a friend of mine after query that his 2mbs line keeps reverting to 1024 sync - tried numerous times to resync on the clientzone, and thus ending up in opening a ticket

We manage all of our uncapped adsl accounts on an hour to hour basis depending on the performance of our network at that time.

If the capacity of the network is stretched at that time we will dynamically shape and manage the account to relieve congestion on the network.

These uncapped clients will be chosen based on historical bandwidth usage. The uncapped users with the most amount of bandwidth used will be managed first if there is network congestion.

Capped adsl accounts will not be affected by any shaping or management on the account. The capped accounts will always get whatever your line speed is able to give you.

We evaluate our network capacity on a hour to hour basis and if network congestion is eased we will un-manage the uncapped accounts until such time as capacity is stretched.

It is our goal to ensure the best possible experience for both the biggest and the smallest of our clients given the parameters we have and as such we reserve the right to manage the uncapped adsl accounts as we deem necessary to ensure optimal performance across our network for all of our clients.

I hope information is useful

shaped to the point where i am downloading from websites at 8kb/s on a 4meg line....

On a 2meg business account you will get 200kb/s+ and it costs the same as the 4meg normal uncapped. half the speed yes, but without the frustration of shaping to below dial-up speeds.

Slow as sin - 2mbs uncapped

When will bundle rates be reduced?

I am trying to change from a 4Mb standard (shaped to death) package, with my line at Telkom to the 4Mb bundled package.

If I use the CP and follow the steps, I port my line over to AH, R244, and then take the business uncapped R697, total, R941.

BUT .... According to this ....ah 4 bundles.JPG I should be being milked for R697....

Have PMd Afriperson twice - no response as yet, and have had some advice from support, which was as valuable as a fridge in the Arctic.

That aside - I have been following AH for some time now, and the two things that seem to be loooooooooooooong in the coming was the price reviews and capacity increases. "Soon" could mean anytime in the next decade.

Afripeople - help me to move over to bundled business - if its difficult for you imagine how difficult it is for your customers.

Thank you.
