Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Holy balls Afriman, that shaping policy.

Shaping Policy: 50% Download/ 50% P2P

Not exactly what a new user of not even a month, wants to see.
Care to explain?

Shaping is always dependant on demand. How long you've had your account is not really an issue. We rate you based on usage patterns, so how much you've data you've used over your time connected, rather than how much data according to a threshold limit.

I am loving my Afrihost experience. Despite the few hassles and issues...still a great service that suits my needs.

Now if Telkom would be ever so damn kind and upgrade my DP to 10mb...

That's so awesome. While it's great to hear positive feedback with no hassles, I love hearing that some people have a great experience EVEN when the've hit some snags. That's the reality of any business relationship, but if we can keep an awesome experience even with a hassle or two, then we're doing it right ;)

I'm shaped to 18.8 and 6.5%
65 GB on 4 Mbps line.
Rest of services running fine, including streaming

Cape has seen some pretty heavy usage today, I've seen us shape more than we'd like, but at least latency and throughput on realtime services has remained constant - which is why streaming is still awesome :)

Data Used: 113.43 GB
Average Daily Usage: 5.40 GB

4Mbps
no shaping

I don't this is a shaping issue. Shaping would never affect ping or traceroutes. If fact, I don't even think that throttling would - not that we throttle. This is induced latency or packet loss, which must have roots elsewhere :(

It's 2100 on a SATURDAY NIGHT and I am shaped at 25% - tomorrow I cancel, I've had enough of this ***.

Sorry to hear that. Remember that shaping is demand based, we don't decide to shape out of a time based policy. If your fellow users in that region are demanding bandwidth, then unfortunately we have to shape to protect realtime services.

Also remember that only non-realtime services are shaped, so you are also prepared to schedule your torrents etc. overnight, everyone can get a much better overall experience.

That's all I've been having. And yes, it does suck.

We'd love to have no shaping on Uncapped accounts - but then they'd be Business accounts.

Shaping is a reality of the Uncapped offering, but we hope to reduce shaping as much as we can while keeping Uncapped viable in terms of costs etc.

:confused:Hi all, I'm in PE and 750 m from a DSLAM but slow as hell this morning. Any idea about these results?

Got your PM.

Looks like this is probably congestion, but we'd definitely need to run a few more tests to confirm for sure :(

@Afri-dudes

We have a terrible problem with disconnections in GT6 on the PS3. I see that TI is looking at their routing and what can be done to improve connections with Sony and PSN.

Is there a way that I can ask AH to look at this?

I run a forum dedicated to online racing and we spend hours and hours preparing for the various races, only to dc during the race.

I personally dc'd about 8 times this morning and eventually had to withdraw so that the guys could go on with the race.

I and most of the guys have done all the port forwarding or DMZ stuff.

Can you guys please help or point me in the right direction?

Obviously is not aimed at just uncapped accounts.

I don't think you've understood what 50%, 12% and 6% is.

50% is worse than 12%...At 50, you're getting 50% of your speed, at 12% you're getting 88% of your speed...not the inverse...

That's not how it works though. THe percentage is the amount of your line speed you could be getting on a shaped service. So 75% means you're getting 75% of your total possible line speed. Could be be less if the server you're server or download is slow, but it's not likely to be more, except for possible bursts but probably not more generally.

As far as I know we're not aware of any issues connecting to PS3. I've seen a few random issues mentioned with PS4, but also not seeing any issues on my PS3 gaming. Remember, even though you're connected to PSN, you're also connected with a game specific server, which could be housed elsewhere. So if there is any break or slow component in the chain, you'd probably disconnect.

We'd need some form of info to follow up or log a ticket though. PM me so we can chat about what you could look out for :(

Thx for the reply. I will pm you.

So why when Im at 12.5% Im actually getting ~80% of my line speed....This 50% has been the slowest my line has been in the last 10 days. I've had 12.5 and 6 about 3 times in 10 days and it wasn't slow at all.

Which is weird then if it works the way you say.

Remember you always get 100% percent of your line on realtime services. So speedtest, for example, will always report good speeds even when shaped to maximu.

Since my area has been upgraded to 40Mb, my 4Mb uncapped connection caps out at 385KBps instead of the 425KBps I got in the past. Thought that maybe it was just me, but checked with a friend in another suburb whose exchange also recently got upgraded and their 4Mb line also caps off at exactly 385KBps?

What the hell is happening?

What are you syncing at on your router. Seeing that there is a 4mb line option - your line could have been dropped from 10meg to 4meg

I'm syncing at 4093300..bytes I assume?

My area used to max out at 4Meg..I did get the upgrade but chose to drop back to the 4Mb option.

Hmm... Are you sure it was always syncing at 4M? 390Kbps is about right for a 4mb line, over 400 indicates 4mb data with 10mb line.

Yes it was. My area didn't support anything higher. Unless I was able to sync just over 4Mb?

Possibly 5 or 6, seeing that back then - you technically could sync up to 10Mbps - that's the only explanation I can think of. When did the slower speeds begin?
