Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

That's pretty difficult to answer, I think it's really a contention issue. Basically, logic would dictate that when two parties contend, they would each get 50%, but it's not always that clean. If you then think there are 50 parties contending, it could be an unequal mix depending on the quality of their lines, priority of their service demand, the time of their requests and all kinds of other stuff - it would be very complex to try to predict :(

Shouldn't realtime services like YouTube streaming still be performing well though? The purpose of everyone being shaped as harshly as they are now is to allow for that.

Studies have shown that upgrades above 4Mbps, for example, have less impact on demand than upgrades to lower speeds. It significantly alters usage behaviour and patterns.

I can believe that. Lots of people must surely have a bandwidth usage ceiling.

Good grief.
3.4TB is a lot of data.

If that's from downloads, I wonder how much storage space they have.

While being shaped to the hilt...which does suck for downloads lemme tell you...I've never had issues streaming media.

As soon as I walk into my house I switch on a youtube channel, 720p, and let it play from TV. Only rarely do I have streaming issues - usually between 20:00 - 21:00 when demand is SERIOUSLY high I imagine and even real time takes a hit.

I can live with this easily enough till extra capacity comes in. I'd love to get 10mb though...just wish Telkom would upgrade my Dslam from 4mb. *sigh* A man can dream.

In theory it shouldn't be affected, but it depends on the severity of the demand. There's a line where we move from shaping to manage demand into possible contention - and that's an area we never want to be in (which is why we ordered capacity in anticipation, we just never expected to wait this long for it).

Many clients are still getting good service, so it's not that every single user is having a terrible streaming or web experience.

Thanks for holding on - I think we'll all be drinking some bubbly on the 10th if this goes according to plan :)

@ Afri-people
Trying to sign up for a new bundle, I currently have just the Telkom telephone line. Am I correct in selecting "Convert to DSL" on the order page? Because it gives a warning about it taking 14-28 days :erm: Surely its 48 hours tops?

I'm afraid that's the correct timeframe :(
It's all up to Telkoms work load in the area.

Ok I don't have a IPC, exchange or bandwidth problem, I have a wife with xbmc on her tab plus addons and daughter with similar setup on media pc (Cartoon HD) problem. Bandwidth will be mine again after 9pm.

Thanks mate. I'm currently with openweb and lag has been a heavy problem for me. Just wanted to see if people with other service providers also been having trouble. I don't play any of the games listed, so it's probably OW. I'm thinking to return to Afrihost. The capped account I'm using at the moment performs well, just need to test xbox gaming.

LOL - I think that goes in the "First World Problems" category ;)

I'm racing GT6 tonight and there is a possibility that I might need to host tonight.
I'm also using a different ISP atm.
Haven't tested gaming with them before, so I hope it performances.

I'm guessing your capped account is a Free GB. Remember we've dropped our capped prices, so you can have a ton of data for a lot less :)

Nope :) Been using a topup account from like a year ago. Started out paying (I think) R21/GB, but my last topup was (I think) R7/GB. Seeing as I have your attention, how does gaming perform on uncapped compared to capped? And when a user reaches the threshold and gets throttled, will it impact gaming too?
