Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Well that sucks. I was hoping to sign up with Afrihost, but looks like its going to have to wait a bit longer. Until then, here's a recommendation for Afrihost.

They need to put up a "sold out" sign next to their home uncapped products. From an outsider view, it looks like it is severely oversold already, but are still selling accounts. This is just making the situation go from really bad to even worse. I'm guessing people are already cancelling their accounts, so the best thing I can suggest they do is put up a "sold out" sign, and keep it there until enough people cancelled their accounts and the nerwork load decreased sufficiently. Only start selling accounts again if there is enough capacity available.

Still sitting at this: Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P
I have no problem with shaping, but you can't shape to this degree and call it fair. What was the point of the LONG awaited IPC upgrade?

If this is constant this is what I'm actually paying for:

4096 / 100 * 6.25 = 256 (not taking into consideration contention)
so let's take contention into consideration, lets be generous and give Afrihost a 15:1 contention ratio
That leaves me with a maximum download speed of 17kbps

I got better download speeds on 56kbps dial-up, and it worked out cheaper that R597.00 PM
I know ADSL is a best effort service, but worse than dial-up can't be best effort, I expect better from my ISP

It will take some time before we find the sweetspot and the right balance to ensure that we can shape the least amount while ensuring excellent latency and throughput for Business and Capped accounts, as well as realtime services on Uncapped.

For now we're being cautious and continuing to shape so that we can slowly release more capacity and see how the network (demand) responds. This way we don't risk flooding the network and causing performance to suffer overall.

I know that performance will already have improved since the upgrade, and we expect the balance of what we ordered to arrive very soon. We also have several plans in motion as failsafes to ensure that we have a better way to manage increases in demand other than waiting for new IPC for weeks or months.

Unfortunately, the nature of business is that we need to justify these financial risks with continued growth, so closing off sign-ups would essentially kill those plans to create a better system for old and new clients.

I know that we've asked a lot from our clients, but we do believe that when these plans come together, we'll be able to offer an amazing service, and possible even better pricing, as we roll out our full plan.

Hear, hear!! Best advice to date. Include ALL accounts as capped also feeling the strain.

50GB used this month on my 2MB account. I got just over one day of decent download speeds after the IPC upgrade, now I'm shaped back to 25%/6.25%. Torrents going at 5kB/s. The shaping is constant. Not just during peak hours, but 24 hours a day. If you read back you'll see numerous others are experiencing the same. That needs explaining.

We're still tweaking the network from today, becuase what we saw over the long weekend was not representative of normal daily use.

So we need to let the network max, and then shape at max, and then kind of see where two meet in order to find the optimal balance, and then reprogramme the shaper to ensure it works within those parameters.

I get what you're saying, but as the service continues to get oversold, the performance continues to worsen, and your reputation goes further and further down the drain, which in my opinion could sink your ship a lot faster than closing off sign-ups can.

If closing off signups isn't an option, tge least you can do is change that green light on your front page to a light shade of red, and inform potential subscribers of the state of your network. You know, a "are you sure" button of some sort.

It did for 3 days, but its back to the way it was from a user experience

So confirmed by Afriman, the East IPC has been FULLY upgraded as INTENDED.

^I was expecting maybe 50%/50% during the day after the upgrades, but instead we're back down to 25%/6.5%. I hope the East IPC is also going through a testing phase.

There may be some shaping during the day, could you keep us posted this evening on how things look?

Lol, AfriGuy you crack me up!

75% download / 75% P2P is SOME shaping; 18.8% download / 6.25% P2P is something else entirely

I've had 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P during the day and through the night. It's like that right now and I'll check tonight again.

To be fair, this is during peak time though :)
Lets see what happens tonight, shaping should ease up quicker.

So you are saying that his should be our expectation?
An account shaped to a browsing account during the day and if everybody place nice, we might get some lighter shaping in the evenings?

The Home Uncapped accounts are subject to shaping during peak times, the additional capacity should allow us to unshape quicker after hours.
