Can you post screenshots of the 2 invoices (blanking out the confidential stuff)?

Funny enough I didnt think to check the invoice. I used the bank notification smses to compare. I checked the invoice and it looks like the R 297 is correct. So now I wonder if I ow money to afrihost. Or maybe just bank notify error.

I'm in Pta, and haven't been able to connect since 09h30 last night. Is this AH authentication again, or something else?

Are you able to connect using the telkom guest account? There aren't any authentication issues that I know of :)

Lol - it's funny how we always assume we are being "done in by" with our ISP's when there is some kinda hiccup. This just display's how "on edge" and sensitive we are with SA ISP's because we are so used to things going wrong, because it happens A LOT, which possess's us to adopt a "good offence is a good defense" strategy.

Case in point:

I've always had a 4mb line with no option of 10mb.

Since the line speed adjustments, I've been waiting for the dust to settle before I phoned 10210 to "downgrade" my line from "fastest" to "faster" profile, but because of all the kuk that TI is going through with their own problems, the 10210 "cancellations" department is a no go at the moment, I decided to adopt a different strategy during April.

Basically, I decided to do the following:

To avoid phoning 10210 and pushing buttons to get to "cancellations" (up to an hour on hold apparently (only "cancellations" I must add)), and seeing that I used to have my line with AH and was a painless simple exercise when I transferred it the first time, I decided to do it again. Alas, when I tried, I kept getting an error saying my line already exists (even though it's been back at Telkom for more than a year), yes, I could have taken it further and contacted a human in support, but this goes against my philosophy with ISP's (I don't want to deal with humans as humans make mistakes, and when one looks at the support that's offered these days, a lot of mistakes) so I opted for plan B which was WA (as I've also got an active clientzone account there).

Luckily this went through without any issues.

It's been two months now, but the other day I get an email saying I owe 2 months worth, and immediately blamed their billing department, but upon further investigatiojn, found out that they can't process cheque cards, so I have updated my deets to a proper CC, and made an internet transfer.

Hi,

I need advice to fix my 4MB uncapped on an Afrihost-managed line...

Since the start of the month, my internet stops working about 3-6 times a day and I have to restart my router to get back online. I attach a router diagnostics screenshot taken when the line goes down. Router restarts temporarily fix it, but it is a *serious* inconvenience.

Nothing changed on my side - no new hardware or firmware updates. My line has been working 100% for the last 3 years. The issue started beginning of this month.

Hi Afriman,

I have 4mb uncapped and when i do speed test both local and int, i get very good results. when it comes to downloads, ie steam or itunes.exe.. im capped at 100kb/s...

Does not go passed that. if i switch to my fnb account, my line speed is fully utilized.

Please advise what is going on here.. why am i shaped so heavily

Sounds like your http downloads are being shaped to 25% of line speed. What does your ClientZone say?

Hey Guys

I've been with AH a while back but left due to their rolling threshold system at that time. Is this still the case, and would you recommend giving their uncapped 4MB a go ? I'm not a heavy downloader - probably do about 150 -250GB a month, sometimes much less...

Tired of Openweb's shaping policy at the moment. The only benefit I have with them is I have a 2 concurrent account option, but, I'm looking at alternatives.

Thanks

Just wondering if anyone else had this. Last month I was billed R197 for my 2mb uncapped. This month I was billed R297. I never changed accounts. So I am bit confused and concered by the price increase.

I'll need to take a look at your account to see how your invoicing works. Remember that we'll also credit our errors or changes, so these will reflect on statements and not invoices.

Drop me a PM :)

When I came home on Sunday evening, I was shaped 18.8 and 6.5% with a usage of 400mb. But now you say you can only get shaped if I move data? Your FB guy says you shape when network is under stress?

Who to believe now?

I think what I meant to say is if you hadn't moved any data since your previous connection, then your profile would not have changed (if you were disconnected or connected to another ISP). So they're two different issues essentially.

I'm not sure as well :(

If you normally pay us R197, I'm wondering why you're now paying R297. I'd prefer to check your account and give you a proper explanation (and satisfy my curiosity)

Sounds like the reason you couldn't sign up is because the line is still on our system. We usually need to clear this on our side manually.

I find that a good portion of issues that I deal with, especially complaints rather then queries, end up being due to different issues or circumstances that what is initially reported. I have one client complaining cos he got a refund but his bank balance it different to the transferred amount. So some days we have to be ISP, bank clerk, home networking specialist and always a little of couch therapy thrown in. But at the end of the day, it's all part of the service game and I'm really glad that I get to meet and interact with a lot more awesome people than not-awesome people :)

I totally disagree with the human interaction part (we don't just make mistakes, we disagree sometimes). I think the best part of any service is the human interaction. I always get an awesome feeling when I get recognised by a company enough to get a personal interaction, whether there is a freebie or promotion attached. After all, we as humans are programmed for human interaction, and I totally believe that the more you believe you are dealing with humans (and not machines) the greater the trust with your clients. Trust is a much more powerful currency than cash!

It's hard to say off the bat whether this is a line issue or a router failure. From the symptoms it could be both.

A line can go down at any time, it could be a weather issue, or a careless driver that crashes into a DP. Could even be the local "wildlife' chewing through cables.

We'd need to run some tests to eliminate possibilities. Could you drop me a PM?

Have you checked what profile your account is on in terms of shaping? It should be displayed in ClientZone.

We don't use rolling thresholds anymore, but for your usage you may want to look at our Capped accounts, cos we offering double data until end of September - which may work out a lot cheaper.

Thx Afriman - but what if the double data promotion ends ? My allocated data will suddenly be halved ?

I tested your free 1GB account last night ( got very good speeds ), streamed about 10 mins of Netflix and watched a Pyramind video of about 30mins and that used 667MB just like that - in less than and hour !

So I'm doubting if capped is going to work for me, but I'll see.

This is a pretty bleak response, any shaping applied should not be creating lag on realtime services like gaming. However, if we are shaped at max and still not able to fully manage demand, we may see contention in the Uncapped data pool, which may not affect Capped accounts as heavily. However contention on the network is ultimately bad for all accounts. It also depends on whether there are any contributing factors on your line/exchange that will be exacerbated by latency in this respect.

Could you please drop me a PM and let's get some more thorough troubleshooting going on this :(

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The lag has been good since then, was probably just one of those intermittent things...

Regarding the shaping, I see that things unlock in the late hours of the morning, which is perfectly fine. Got ten gigs last night, so no issues there.

It would be good if HTTP downloads were not slowed down as much as they appear to be during the day, but all in all, I'm happy enough with the account as is.

Looking to get you guys to manage the line and switch to the business uncapped next month. If you can advise how I do that...

+1
This is the biggest issue I had with this account and was a deal breaker for me.

Was going based on the usage you mentioned in your first post. Real time services should perform the same, or similar, on Uncapped because they are unshaped.
