Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Look, put it this way, I'll have to go SOMEWHERE come 30 June, and chances are that it will most likely be you guys, but, it's just a little disheartening to read that quite a few users are complaining about the same things we suffer @ OpenWeb.

Most of my usage will come from streaming as I said before with the odd large download. I also VPN into work a lot, but that is usually fine.

My son also plays games online every weekend ( or when I allow him to ).

I have a 10Mbps line, but a 4MB account, so capped is going to get used up very quickly I think , especially with streaming. However, I may give that a go for a month and then see how it goes, then maybe upgrade to Uncapped if i see that it is not going to be enough bandwidth, or I'll just go straight uncapped from the get go - will see.

What happens when your Double Data deal expires - do you lose half your bandwidth ? That also puts me off capped at the moment, I don't like feeling restricted, even though I probably may not use all the bandwidth.

This shaping is ridiculous. It's 6AM and I can't even get half my line speed.

Speed tests are perfect. Full line speed. Shap shap.

Shaping is 18%/6%

Youtube performance...2mb speed. This morning when shaping was 0% I had full 4mb speed.

And here is the screenshot of the what the throughput looks like.

As you can see it's up and down and frequently goes to 0. This ONLY happens when shaping is active! Will do some tests now with google DNS used etc.

There is clearly an adverse effect on realtime when shaping is used - in the South anyway - on home uncapped.

Please help Afri Team. Again...this only started last week.

Just to put things in perspective. This morning again - no shaping applied - and youtube ran perfectly. Take a look at the screenshot above in my quote - BROKEN when shaping is applied - vs the one below when no shaping is active and YouTube runs like it should.

Guy's I'm on the East which got it's full IPC upgrade. Believe me it got a little better, but it's nowhere what I expected. Still shaped to death until 7-8 in the evening regularly. Don't hold your breath.

Seems the only way to go to get a good internet experience is to pony up for a business account.

I don't care about the shaping really...I can dl what I need in the few hours at night when I am unshaped. What I cannot accept is when I am shaped and my realtime services are NOT running like they should due to shaping being active.

I think it's always good to give different products a try to see what suits your specific needs. The easiest will always be running a Free GB account, which should give you a basic idea of how Business and Capped should perform. You can also PM me for a discount on your first month on Uncapped to give that a try.

Remember that we're also expecting massive upgrades for the North and South networks, so the experience will change very soon to what we ideally envision for Uncapped internet.

It is correct - 10Mbps is heavily discounted, so you basically get a R399 line product for R100 bucks. Crazy value!
