Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Don't see this happening in the near future, but probably will I guess when fibre accessibility is more common.

Maybe not immediately, but fibre is the future of fixed broadband - it's definitely a direction we're keeping in our sights. When an opportunity comes along - we'll jump on it :)

Hi Afriman,

Every weekend for the last month or so I've been struggling with major slowdown on my 2Mb uncapped with Afrihost (afrihost also manages my Telkom line). Sometimes during the week as well.

This might be DSLAM / exchange issues though, are there any tests I can do to give you the necessary information to maybe check this?

I have run Zertop's line testing tool which shows some major packet loss:

Zertop's "Is it my Line" Results
Basic Report:

Your average ping was 73ms
Your maximum ping was 94ms

Looking at your average ping, your line seems to be a bit dodgy :/ This may account for any slow speeds you may be experiencing. However, it could just be related to a high-latency home network (ie... Wi-Fi). If you feel the need, please post the results (at the end of the program) into the forum for advice

On a sidenote, I haven't been able to recreate my ADSL port this whole weekend, it keeps timing out on the Afrihost webpage.

Kind regards,

The port recreate issue was probably due to a problem on Telkom's portal. It was down for ages - I think it is back now.

We'd need to run more tests, but it could be congestion. Drop me a PM when you can.

Posting here because Afrihost support... can't handle it any more -_-

Opened a ticket last week Tues as my latency to gaming servers in Europe (diablo 3) was insanely high. Speedtest/pingtest/traceroutes to CPT and Europe were all normal

Support has asked me for results to Speedtest/pingtest/traceroutes 2 or 3 times over the last week (felt like everytime i asked for info on the issue, my ticket was restarted)

After all that, i got "From the results that you have sent through, it seems your package is functioning correctly."

2 mins later I tried diablo 3 again:

That's functioning correctly??

After again pointing out that my issue is about LATENCY and not SPEED (didn't seem to know the difference)

Support then told me according to the traceroute my ping jumps (to the usual ~220ms for europe) when it leaves their network. I mentioned in my response that I DID traceroute EU, as they requested I do it to the address I'm experiencing slow speeds on. Yet I get this kind of answer?!

The final response I got had this in it:

"I see that the shaping policy in your area has been increased.

This would be due to a high amount of Afrihost users in your area. "

I'm not a heavy user, average around 45gb/pm. For a brief moment yesterday, my latency was at 280-300ms, the only difference I could see from clientzone was that my p2p shaping was at 25% (not 12.5%, what it's been at all week)

I don't really know what else i can do... my WA account works perfectly, my free 1GB AH account works fine-ish (280-310ms) and my uncapped is at 3000ms most of the time.

Time to change ISP? :/

Hi

Sorry to hear you've been having hassles with us :(
These results are definitely concerning! If you could, please drop me a PM with some tests or any relevant ticket IDs so I can take this further.

Hi there AfriGuy / AfriMan
Sent you guys a PM :). If you could have a look and see if I fall under an MSAN area please :)

Maybe not immediately, but fibre is the future of fixed broadband - it's definitely a direction we're keeping in our sights. When an opportunity comes along - we'll jump on it :)

I'll be holding thumbs, AfriMan!

How long does Afrihost take to reply to tickets? I'm still waiting for reply from one I sent yesterday...
