Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I'll check in with the guys as to where all the testing is going. If we've followed every step and we cannot get this to work, then we should definitely be straight and transparent about it. I do know from my own testing that 720p is possible on a shaped 4Mbps account. But I will speak to the guys to ensure that we give you straight, no-nonsense feedback.
I also know it's possible. I've had that experience.

However something has changed on your side which in turn has changed that experience.

I do appreciate the follow up and the help from your side to have this resolved.

Hi,

Afrihost upgraded my line from 4mb to 10mb in the last week - totally unsolicited. I manually reverted it now, but my question is will it affect my billing for the next month? I am going to be seriously upset if I get billed an extra R120 for this crap.

Thanks

Since I'm awake anyway I decided to test YouTube again.

With shaping at 50/50 (presently) the realtime performance is PERFECT. Getting full line speed on videos.

Again - this is proof that with shaping at the harshest level of 18/6 the realtime streaming is being effected. With it at 50/50 it's not.

Please have your guys look into this!

Of course, we have to look into what you guys experience to make sure that all our clients get the best experience. I appreciate that you're willing to work with us here :)

AfriMan, sorry I know this is the wrong thread. But can I use the bronze, R9 Web hosting package for hosting Word Press?

You cannot host wordpress without a SQL database, so the R9 package will not work

If you reverted the line, we submit an upgrade to Telkom. It depends on when you submitted the downgrade.

Issue is that Telkom are telling us you have and billing for the higher line, we had to either downgrade your line or upgrade your account. We emailed every single affected client to give them sufficient time to either stick with the speed or downgrade their product.

Been a while since I visited this forum, the last time being when Afrihost began "testing the network" by turning on shaping for all hours of the day, save for the early hours of the morning when we're all asleep. I've read a few pages back and couldn't find an answer, so figured I'd just ask. Is this test still on-going?

I'm a 10mbps Uncapped user. This weekend, I reinstalled my computer and therefore had a lot of Windows updates to get through, least of all the 3GB+ Windows 8.1 update. I had to use Turbocharge to get decent throughput as my line was showing 12.5% shaping (as it does all the time lately). Yesterday, I downloaded the latest Adobe Lightroom and I was getting terrible speeds. I had to switch to my Afrihost Free 1GB account to get this 950MB file at full speed (1MB/sec).

Is this really what can be expected from Afrihost Uncapped going forward? If so, is it not misleading to call it 10mbps when at no point during the day can you actually achieve these speeds? I'm in a difficult position whereby I've been extremely PRO Afrihost for years now, and the truth is, I usually don't notice the shaping because 12.5% of 10mbps isn't really noticeable for day-to-day activities. However, this weekend has highlighted just how badly we are being mislead, and I'm thinking about moving purely on principal. That's not a threat; I doubt Afrihost would blink any eyelid if I left. In fact, I'm pretty sure that this "network test" is designed to shed the heavy abusers from the network because they are the only ones that will likely notice the poor performance, and 90% of Afrihost's users aren't reading these forums either.

I'd just like some clarity on the issue if possible. Officially, are Afrihost's Uncapped accounts now shaped indefinitely, regardless of the load on the network (as it was in the past)?

The answer to your questions are yes, yes and yes.

The testing is still on going - though this by now has been 2 months and I believe it is the new status quo going forward and I doubt it will be revised anytime soon.

This is what is to be expected from the Home accounts from Afrihost. The point has been brought up a few times that their website advertising has to be amended to state the new shaping policy from 7am to 10pm.

Officially Afrihost's accounts are shaped from 7am to 10pm to the harshest level - being 18.5%/6.5% http/p2p - and from 10pm onward will it become dynamic.

If you in any way download data or programs etc on a semi regular basis or have to use your line for work often I would not recommend this product to anyone given the current state of affairs.

Capped or Business is the way to go.

For myself all I do a lot of is watch youtube, twitch and play some online...so I'm sticking it out while they try and solve my realtime streaming problem. Otherwise I'd also move to capped or to another ISP.

Excuse the lack of info, I've been away last week.
From what I know, we're still crunching a whole stack of numbers and info to get to the best overall experience on our network.

Near 3 months or so of tests and still crunching? not in a million years would I believe that.

I don't think it's just looking at the data, we need enough of it to make an informed decision and plan the best way to run our network.

Been having allot of lag for the past 3 weeks on COD Ghosts quite frustrating and annoying when doing online gaming.
Anyone else having this issue?
4mb Uncapped

Turbocharged my account to download a torrent this morning, wouldn't go past 10KB/s. Logged into WA account, 402KB/s :erm:

Thanks for the info.

Honestly, I'd feel better if Afrihost DID amend their website and basically "come clean" about what it is they are doing. As I said, most of the time, I don't notice the shaping, so I'm probably not going to jump ship just yet. But if I DID leave, it would be purely on principal. What they are doing now is immoral in my opinion. If you cannot achieve your line speed at ANY point during the hours of 7am -> 10pm, then Afrihost should not be selling the product as such. Basically what we have here are after-hours accounts, not so?

Like I said before, the only guys that know about this are the people reading this forum, and for the most part, those are the guys that I believe this "network test" is designed to chase away. Like AfriMan says, there is no "mass exodus" of users, and I believe it is purely because 90% of their customers are blissfully unaware that they are not getting what they are paying for. If more people knew that their 10mbps accounts were essentially 2mbps accounts for all but the wee hours of the morning, I'm pretty sure there WOULD be a lot more people jumping ship on principal alone. That's just my two cents. I'm going to do my bit to spread the word about it until Afrihost come clean, or end this "network test".

looks like shaping kicks in a 9am now. Though i did notice streaming last night was horrid at around 7pm

Are you able to run any further diagnostics when you experience the lag so we can get a better idea of what could be happening? :(

That's definitely not right. Could be that the turbocharge failed to execute. Also, it sometimes takes up to 15 minutes for the shaping change to take effect (so we allocate an extra fifteen minutes per session).
