Been a while since I visited this forum, the last time being when Afrihost began "testing the network" by turning on shaping for all hours of the day, save for the early hours of the morning when we're all asleep. I've read a few pages back and couldn't find an answer, so figured I'd just ask. Is this test still on-going?
I'm a 10mbps Uncapped user. This weekend, I reinstalled my computer and therefore had a lot of Windows updates to get through, least of all the 3GB+ Windows 8.1 update. I had to use Turbocharge to get decent throughput as my line was showing 12.5% shaping (as it does all the time lately). Yesterday, I downloaded the latest Adobe Lightroom and I was getting terrible speeds. I had to switch to my Afrihost Free 1GB account to get this 950MB file at full speed (1MB/sec).
Is this really what can be expected from Afrihost Uncapped going forward? If so, is it not misleading to call it 10mbps when at no point during the day can you actually achieve these speeds? I'm in a difficult position whereby I've been extremely PRO Afrihost for years now, and the truth is, I usually don't notice the shaping because 12.5% of 10mbps isn't really noticeable for day-to-day activities. However, this weekend has highlighted just how badly we are being mislead, and I'm thinking about moving purely on principal. That's not a threat; I doubt Afrihost would blink any eyelid if I left. In fact, I'm pretty sure that this "network test" is designed to shed the heavy abusers from the network because they are the only ones that will likely notice the poor performance, and 90% of Afrihost's users aren't reading these forums either.
I'd just like some clarity on the issue if possible. Officially, are Afrihost's Uncapped accounts now shaped indefinitely, regardless of the load on the network (as it was in the past)?
