Exactly this. Youtube vids will run fine and then randomly drop speed and stay low. But always 720+. 480 will stick to fullspeed constantly.

This was the clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2BLaj4WXLQ Playing it now, it runs flawlessly. At the time of my post, for an hour prior to my post this clip would simply run poorly 720p60, maybe they were having bandwidth issues?

Off-topic a bit. I'm surprised at 60fps, 60fps clips are about 10-20% bigger file. So not that much different. I use this site to have a look at the clip size. http://www.clipconverter.cc/

Around an hour leading up to my complaint post, nearly all clips at 720 ran horribly. Now they are running fine. Could it have been peak bandwidth being hit in the EastIPC or something?

Just checked the IPC now, all looks good - no weird dips or spikes up in usage/ latency.
Did you grab any pings or traceroutes when you saw the performance drop?

Uh crap, no. This isn't the first time this has happened. I'll notice on some weekdays at random times (but only for about an hour and during work hours) that 720p performance will be very bad.

In future I'll try do some traceroutes and ping tests. Traceroute to where to be clear, Youtube.com?

Lets get some results run and see if we can spot anything.
A traceroute to youtube.com would be good, otherwise any other site should also be fine.

I've done this ad nauseum. Tracrt's doesn't show a thing.

Do you have any tests that I can look at that you've done with our team? I can always try and pick up something that's been chatted about before.
Nope. There are no tests that show a problem when this happens other than pure bandwidth throughput dropping off.

Once the video is locally cached in the proper format it streams perfectly. Have to wait literally just start bid and hit F5.

I've tested this on other ISPs and with them it doesn't happen though. I chalk it up to your international bandwidth / links not being able to handle the load and or data classification during peak time.

Not a major train smash.

Can't say for sure, I think tests are vital to determine the cause.
If not the cause, at least it'll point us in the right direction to identify any trends.

Well as of right now at this time it works perfectly.

This usually occurs between 19:00 and 22:00. After that it goes back to 'normal' if I can call it that.

Again. When this happens all tracrts are perfect with sub 10ms pings until it goes overseas etc.

Could you run a few more test this evening for me?

Afrigenie has been trying to assist with my line. But he is not around. Currently my account just doesnt work. I am only able to stream at 144P on youtube on a 4Mb line. I have posted numerous ping tests and tracerts. Clearly something is funny. I've had my line reset, my ports recreated. Ive had my line set to 4mb a few times. They've also fixed some weird shaping that was being incorrectly applied to my account. Nothing is working. I've set my DNS to the ones given. Same issue. Whats next? Paying for a service im no where close to getting.

If you've gone through these steps it may not be related to shaping or your account, but I'll need to see the results shared between you and AfriGenie. Otherwise, I'm sure you can keep working with him to get the results you expect :(

Since the IPC upgrade, my speeds have been good. But since Sunday, my speeds have been very erratic. One minute I will get 400kbps, next minute I'm down to 10, and then I will bounce around some more.

I tested my line with a WebAfrica account, and the speed stabilizes. I'm not sure if is something to do Afrihost or maybe something in my area. Its just very frustrating!

Speeds should be pretty consistent, can't see anything unusual from our end.
Could you run a few speedtests and have them pasted here please?

Well I said I'd do the tests when this rubbish happened again...

Youtube 720p performance on a 4mb line - a perfect 4mb line thank you very much as there is no issues on it with attenuation and SnR putting me in 18mb sync range.

Tracert's are ALL perfect. Cannot get better than these.

Tried this on another ISP - flawless. Once this same video cached it also played flawlessly. Your data handling/link/server throughput on non cached content (specifically HD) is for lack of a better term, piss poor sad to say.

Sure thing.

Also just to prove the problem is not my line or whatever even further and that it is your international non cached playing ability.

Here is the same video - after the 720p has cached locally.

How do you like that difference eh?

As I said - this is not a train smash. Just have to wait a few minutes for the video to be cached locally in the format you'd like to watch - 720p+ (this does not happen on 480p and lower for some reason).

Ah well. Something for your network engineers to ponder.

I'll have all of this info passed onto our guys to have a look into, if we can replicate the issues here we can implement a fix accordingly.
