Uncapped ADSL is for browsing only?

When will this be fixed Afrihost or is your focus only on mobile?

It depends on which region you are in. Shaping is determined by overall demand. Remember that P2P is only shaped, not blocked, so you can still leave downloads to run overnight (which is actually preferable in terms of network demand) or to run in the background.

Most networks start to become unshaped just after 10pm/11pm with most users unshaped within an hour or so, but sometimes the heavier users are only unshaped several hours afterwards depending on their usage patterns.

On ADSL 4mbps home uncapped these services are being throttled down to ~2kbps (yes TWO), and constantly timeout/disconnect:

news.nextgennews.net:443
secure.europe.thecubenet.com:80
ssl-eu.astraweb.com:443

Presumably that's not right?

We don't throttle any services, we only shape P2P and any other non-realtime services. We also don't shape by port, we use packet signatures on the traffic so that we shape as efficiently as possible. We shape based on overall demand on the regional network.

What other services you experienced as "throttled"? Looks like the one's you listed are NNTP, which is a shaped service.

Is it me or is Afrihost dog slow right now. Im struggling to load webpages at the moment. I can load a speed test and get good results but any other web traffic is almost unusable.

What type of web traffic are you testing? If they are shaped services like torrents or NNTP, then it may be shaping (especially since your speedtest, which is realtime, seems normal)

Afrihost's normal uncapped is definitely not for downloading. I checked some records from last night and this morning, and I found I had 5 hours of unshaped internet. From around 2 o'clock until 7 o'clock. And as soon as it turned 7:00 AM, my internet dropped like a rock. My latency in WOW and CS:GO is horrible. I can't load videos in Youtube unless I set it 144p. And guess what, I log into my backup WebAfrica account, and everything works perfectly.

I don't understand why the shaping is so aggressive and for 19 hours a day. I would understand if there was not enough bandwidth, but Afriguy has said that that is not the problem. So is this Afrihost's new business model for uncapped?

Worst part is that we are being shaped so badly, but business uncapped and capped users seem to be suffering as well.

Definitely time to move my business and personal accounts elsewhere :(

Yeah, websites also not loading, timing out and teamspeak won't connect AGAIN today.
For the last couple of weeks it has been a pain to use teamspeak, but for the last 2 or so days it has been a pain just to use the internet to browse.

Don't know if it will help to state this, but I'm in the Pretoria Area. I'm assuming that I am being shaped to the max as I haven't been able to get into the Clientzone since yesterday afternoon.
Also can't log into Uplay.

I sent a mail to one of the support guys last night, but since then my experience has been getting even worse.

Im trying to load gmail, youtube, webpages just in general. When I start a download from my email 200Kb it struggled to finish.
I restart my modem and in the first minute everything is fine, no issues, after that the connection just becomes almost unusable. At about 12:00am the connection seemed to open up and speeds seemed normal.

I cleared my browsers cookies, cache etch. Tried a different browser & computer, all with the same problems.

NO P2P was happening on the network, no unauthorised users were on the network, it is just myself on my laptop and my girlfriend on her ipad. I checked the DHCP client list and we are the only ones on the network.

Like I said, if I went to speedtest.net my test showed the correct speeds, my line is syncing at 6mbps down and 650kbps up

This has been the case for a while now and last night was just particularly bad.

:(

I'm really sorry for the experience particularly with CS:GO and TS, with the help of Qrox, we've definitely made progress towards resolving the latency and packet loss issue, and I am sure you will see a significant improvement over the coming days.

You should - however - definitely not be having any issues with Youtube and WoW. If you enable TurboCharge, do you see any improvement with those two?

Hmmm, I've heard of a few users with similar issues.

Could I ask if you can check what your current DNS Settings are on your modem? If it is set to automatic, can you switch your DNS on the modem to manual then enter the following settings:
Primary DNS: 196.7.7.7
Secondary DNS: 8.8.8.8

Once that is done, can you please restart your modem and test again.

It cant be a DNS issue, downloading small files it struggles to do.

I have already tried changing my DNS to 8.8.8.8 manually, I got no joy when loading pages.

I know this has been asked a million times and there are various threads, but can anyone recommend an ISP with a similar package that actually works? Currently paying 600 odd for the 4mb uncapped incl line. Thanks.

Very strange!

Are you able to run a traceroute to the sites that aren't opening?

Maybe look at http://crystalweb.co.za/ seems that people love them for streaming and gaming

Isn't Crystal pretty expensive though?
Their uncapped 4mb is I think R35 more expensive than Afrihost's.

I switched to their 120gb capped.

120gb anytime data with 480gb midnight to 6am data.

Now I know a lot of people are not in favour of managing their data...but if switching on a schedular makes my overall experience better then I don't mind. I was scheduling my downloads on Afrihost and I still could not play games, use mumble or stream without endless useless hassles. On CW...it all just works.

For me anyway. Lowest pings I've seen ever, Twitch streams High by default! And youtube auto loads 720p - never ever had that on AH.

Do they not have a 60gb + 240gb Midnight? Cause that would be perfect. I only use 120 gigs a month normally with downloads. I have no issues managing my data. As long as the service I get actually works.

Give it a few days :)

They are finalizing their new packages which will include just such a package as you mentioned. They are fully aware of the need for smaller packages and will come to the table.

Their new site, portal and packages should be launching in next week hopefully - don't quote me on that hehe :D

Tried to do some gaming in my last holiday which is only a week before I start writing exams, but clearly Afrihost doesn't allow for that lol. Yeah if Crystal offers some smaller packages that would be awesome! Plus with the small amount of cap I use on the uncapped, if I switch I'd save 100 bucks a month, it's a win win.
