Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Like I posted earlier, it seems QoS is applied to http flows once they hit a certain size. (I'm guessing around 5MB based on my speedtest observations). So downloading a 700MB iso IS going to be affected. What line do you have?
It also appears that ALL your high-traffic flows go into the same QoS bucket - so your total speed for ALL down-rated transfers will be x kbps (512 on my line) in total.

Hmmm. I am on a 2 meg line and tried to download a +-1MB file. It still ran at 15KB/s.

Although a much larger file did go slower at about 7KB/s. So you may be right. :)

4k on a 1MB line....AFRIHOST!!!! SHAME ON YOU!!! WILL YOU DO THIS TO YOUR FAMILY!!!

Don't yhere with those tendencies of "supply and demand" and "new IPC deployment" and, and, and.... Its just bogwash and you trying to save face.

Sorry peeps but I've had it! They making money by not being completely truthful.

First I was told that I have AGGRESSIVE shaping cos of my total DL. Then I was told "No, its not that. The tech you spoke it misinformed...." blah, blah, blah...

That's it! I'm calling tomorrow and cancelling service. Also going to expose this crap on HelloPeter! Anyone joining me?

I am experiencing the exact same thing for the past 2 weeks. Know the feeling :(

im pretty sure at 22:00 there is not that much traffic that warrents 1.3kb/s download speeds on htp downloads? cant even download java to set up my minecraft server :(

Seems like downloads were again a little slower than usual last night. We are still in the process of developing the revised QoS which will give HTTP downloads much better priority. This won't be in place before the weekend, but we're aiming for early next week if all goes well with testing. This will definitely improve overall experience, though torrents and P2P may be even slower than before.

Of course, this is all going to change once our new IPC comes online. With additional capacity, as well as localised breakout from Telkom's network, performance should improve overall, and local issues should not affect other areas as much, i.e. so latency or congestion in JHB should not affect CPT or DBN.

I should be getting some ETA's soon, I'll post all the info I get as soon as I can.

Afriman, Thanks for providing us with some info.

However, stating that "downloads were again a little slower than usual" is putting it mildly. Just on this page of the thread, you have 3 ppl in 2/3 different locations(Not sure where Grep's "In the ghetto" is;) ) all experiencing be < 5kbp/s download speeds. Whether its Http or torrents the speeds are generally shocking at the moment. There must be something that can be done right?

help please, if my line and data accounts are with afrihost, how much of a process is it to move them both over to a different isp? or should i leave the line with them and get a different data account, would that improve my speeds?

Why are you guys staying with Afrihost if your experience with them is so miserable?

Well its simple. Up until recently the service I been receiving was great. If possible I want to stick with them, if they are able to resolve the network issues. :p

I personally am waiting to see if this new fix will sort out the http downloads. Not worried about torrents. Still creeping around 9kb/s for the whole day from around 8am - 23:00pm. Been working quite a bit from home has been quite a problem when nothing is really working. But I do have hope and also my line and data is with Afrihost. I think moving to another ISP is going to be a mission (not sure if this is true but I have read moving you line and data to another ISP is not straight-forward). Also these problems only developed (on my side) from around a week and half ago. Afrihost have been great to me since then and have saved me quite a bit with their great prices and since it is January again, money is tight after a long December and can't afford to look at other options half way through a paid month and then having to cough up pro-rata for another data package elsewhere. I am sure there is someone there that will figure out where the problem is that affects quite a few of us.

Wacky za succinctly sums it up.

I too had major issues, went through normal escalation procedures, reset my port(line) with telkom and all is well (almost) again.
On 4 meg uncapped on a 6 meg synced line in JHB and am getting promised speeds up and down now, with some dips in early evening that they are monitoring.
Was getting horrible speeds that was most evident in YouTube buffering and slow web performance.

Those of you whose lines are still with telkom, I assume you have asked them to reset your line/port test to check that congestion is also not a factor?

I think we can safely say for the 99% of us this is not the issue. Ive switched over to other uncapped isp trial accounts and no longer have issues.

I'm glad yours is more or less sorted out. A very helpful chap at Afrihost support has reset my account and my port, and unfortunately it has made no difference. :(

Ah well then I wish you all the best of luck and hope that their promised improvements help us all in the next few weeks. I can say that I can completely sympathize as I had to use Plugg for awhile in order to to use my line in December. I should have clarified that the congestion factor in my case creeped in earlier this month.

Got a 4 meg line and nothing but pure internet joy since december 2012. Cannot be happier, Randpark area for me.

Afriman i need some convincing here , Plugg Isp have a deal that is cheaper than yours , is backed by IS , and thus far people are singing its praises .

Why should this long time member and fan of your company stay with you ?

SHAME ON YOU AFRIHOST!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!

Do an HTTP download using a DL Manager and not even getting 20k on a 1MB line! And all it is...is some Cisco CCNA and CCNP and CCIE study material!

AH - You should be ashamed of yourself!

I am getting 5kb on torrent downloads since 6am this morning and thats at its peak, most times drops to around 2-3kb. seriously considering moving my data account to mweb. is it possible to leave the line with afrihost and have the data account with another company? help anyone?

Yes it is possible. When I cancelled, I cancelled just the data portion. Seeing the ISP's make a profit out of having our lines with them, I didn't want to give any more money to these thieving b******s, so once I was up and running with my new ISP, I then started the process of moving my line back to telkom, all done through the client panel.
