Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Cape Town is *SHOCKING* at the moment. It started slowing down over the weekend and now we're grinding to a halt. Come on Afrihost this is PATHETIC!!!

I can't get faster than 0.9mbps on a 4mbps line:

And I've hardly downloaded anything this month.

Reboot your router and see if it improves - otherwise PM AfriMan with your details.

LOL - You sound like Afrihost support. Can't *possibly* be their network - must be everything else.

Ja......so....I guess you didn't reboot your router then?
Helped me in the past, and yes, I am not saying it is not their network, just mentioning that in some cases its the line in between.
:)

:)

And if it is their network, sending afriman a message may help a lot.

Maybe rebooting the router works, maybe not.

I've done that, fixed my line in clientzone, updated the router firmware. Capped account works wonderfully, but uncapped is getting worse for me in Cpt. Slowly, but surely.

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been a little scarce today. I see a few reports of slow download speeds and a couple of people saying that YouTube is slower than usual.

Is this the general feeling? Anyone have major issues on real time services? Please let me know so we can check out your queries. If it is an issue on the network, the more feedback we get, the quicker we can resolve it. If it's related to other issues like Telkom Backhaul or DSLAM congestion, than at least we can help figure out what to do next.

Thanks :)

HuH? IMHO everything is real time except for torrents and p2p.
Meaning downloads is also "real time"
As far as "trouble" goes just read back and TRY and decipher.

Well, after a couple of years of 4mb uncapped with Afrihost, I've had to downgrade to 1mb uncapped to save a few bucks due to current finances. I knew that my performance wrt d/l speeds would take a hit, but not by as much as I'm currently experiencing. It's basically a waste of time to run any torrents during the day, and the speed doesn't really improve until after I go to sleep, which is around 11pm. 1mb is not exactly bottom of the barrel, but it sure feels like it :(

Don't know if anyone have noticed this or even posted this before, but I just felt it is a bit unfair. :p

Also, my http downloads are very slow tonight. :( Speed test is fine, though.

That site needs to update their geo IP database. Nothing to do with afrihost or mtn.

I bet telkoms new Adsl range has the same problem!

You can tell with 100% certainty that it's neither the router nor the line if you get normal speeds with another ISP account.

Well, I've had it.

With my Afrihost Uncapped account download going to hell for no particular reason in the last two weeks of Jan , I decided to swap back to an capped, UNSHAPED UNSHAPED UNSHAPED UNSHAPED account. I'm trying to download a 20mb indie game demo, and my speed on a 4mb line is 20kb/s through Firefox.

Afrihost, you're dead to me. Ever since this move over to MTN's network, I've had nothing but inconsistency in terms of reliability and speed. Unless you have a legitimate reason for why this is occurring other than shaping - and let's be clear, it IS shaping, since the same sites I've speedtested against in Steam's built-in browser outperform all my standard browsers by a massive margin - I will be cancelling my account and moving to another service provider.

EDIT And to be clear, my total downloads for Jan fell in the 60gb range. Hardly extensive abuse given Afrihost's "leaderboards".

+1. I am awaiting the new prices from all ISP's and seeing who is in the front, regards to pricing, but more importantly, reliability.

I kick myself for the move to Afrihost from Mweb now. I will say it again, we all saw the move to MTN was going to cause major issues, but Afrihost didn't???

Oh well, lesson learned.

^10Mbps line............

Is anyone else getting extremely slow download speeds from the news server? I'm on 4mb uncapped but since Friday last week I've been getting 20Kb/s - 80Kb/s.

The Afrihost news server has been very unreliable and slow since the move to the MTN network. Initially Afrihost said they were in the process of setting up their own news server after the move, but I haven't heard anything since?

They did say so, news points to a news server in The Netherlands.

I have slow downloading speed from local sites. ;(

How long notice do you have to give, or can you just cancel at the end of the month, since it's a month-2-month contract?

If you cancel before the 25th, you won't have to pay for the following month.

I use Astraweb and news.afrihost.co.za in combination , and not noticing any speed problems. I was getting full speeds this weekend. My news downloader keeps stats of how much i download from which server, in the last few days, it was 4GB from Astraweb and 3GB from news.afrihost . So that's not too shabby , considering Astraweb allows 8 connections and Afrihost only 4. I had much poorer performance with the Mweb news server in terms of content, speed was fine, but for some reason content was not pulled from the Mweb server as regularly, resulting in bulk of my downloads coming from Astraweb.

That said, because i'm using 2 servers , it's not always clear whether there is a speed problem on 1 server specifically. As it is, my app open up to 12 connections to both servers simultaneously , and everytime i looked i've been getting pretty much between 1.5-4Mpbs. So it might be that afrihost's news server was slower, but since almost 50% of the content still came from there, i can't imagine it being significantly slower than Astraweb.
