Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Afriman, the current experience I have with my R1 account. The unshaped, brilliant performance etc; I assume that the business account would offer this as well.

/Pondering going on the business account after 25th

Just take note, QoS on the Business Uncapped accounts can de-prioritized it after hours if there are network issues, congestion or high contention.

Fair enough but on the whole it should give better service.

Day 4 with no service here :( No it's not Afrihost's fault, my router fails to authenticate even on the telkom guest account.

Phoned 10210 until I am blue in the face, they refuse to open another ticket, FFS. As the DSL link is up they say it's fine. Line is not with AH either.

What to do  How does one escalate the matter?

Easy go into a Telkom service center I never phone Telkom, I always take a walk to the service center.

Drastic move but cut your phone line and report the fault. When they come out to repair it you can tell its still not working as your ADSL is now fauly.

errrmm As long as you cut the correct side, telkom will charge you if you cut INSIDE your premises. My outside or Telkom side is underground.

AfriMan, how long is the uncapped product going to be unshaped for?

Also been trying to get an answer to this puzzle. Some indications are that it is unshaped only until 16th March. I switched my account after seeing a My BB headline on 7th March saying that Afrihost uncapped account was to become unshaped but now they say it will only be unshaped until changes are completed. Have sent an enquiry to them asking for clarification but no response. Hope they answer soon.

"We are confident that our additional capacity will more than handle the additional traffic, and after a week has passed we will re-assess our current shaping policies."

I guess with the issue of the last few days, they would probably take a few extra days to gather the required data, before implementing adjusted QoS shaping policies.

This un-shaping' only temporarily to say thank you but mostly to gather data for fine tuning Qos.
So enjoy while it lasts.

after a couple of days of excellent throughput and latency (business hours as after hours have been horrendous) it seem slike its back to before the CPT IPC was put in place? is this the future, was the good service to keep us on the line? surely things cannot be this bad forever....

International test 4MB Uncapped
Test conducted on 15 March 2013 15:38
Download Speed: 606 kbps (75.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 320 kbps (40 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 235 ms

I had some issues on Wednesday night but was trying to update my PS3 BF3 - download bombed out. Last night it was very slow but all my other browsing and downloads was fast.

This morning everything was fine.

Personally believe the problem was more the servers I was accessing than my actual line.

Just got this response from Afrihost so it seems that the My BB headline (Afrihost uncapped ADSL now unshaped)
on 7th March was REALLY misleading!!

"Hi Ray,

I trust you are well. ;)

The unmanaged policy was only for last week, and was purely to show that the management policies we use do not limit the amount of data going through, but rather target abusive protocols such as peer-to-peer and other file sharing.

Our management policy differentiates between real-time and secondary services. Gaming, Youtube, browsing and other common services are left unlimited, but secondary protocols may be shaped according to the network load.

I hope that answers your questions. If not, please reply to this mail and we will assist further.

Note that rules only get applied to Business ADSL is there is heavy use on the account, as per the thresholds we announced (which I think are still the same. Otherwise it is fully unshaped (no QoS) day or night.

As far as I know we're still unshaped, but officially it was only guaranteed for a week (which has passed). As we said in the article, we're reviewing and monitoring so that when we do shape, we can still deliver a great experience.

AfriMan, something somewhere must have changed in the last 12 hours. I'm seeing faster, more consistent rates than I have for a very, very long time. I pray to the internet gods that it will remain so - I just want to stop giving Monochoice money. :(

The way I see it, I've got until the 24th to decide whether I want to continue with Afrihost as my primary ISP. The main reason I signed up for this promo is because I've decided to can my DSTV subscription and go the Netflix route. So this promo provided me a perfect opportunity to trial run the uncapped product before I make my final decision as I'm not one really to hop from one ISP to another. So I'm hoping AH can really come to the party and provide a stable network, with little as possible downtime and "mishaps" as possible, cos lets be real, no network is gonna be running perfectly 24/7/365!

Hi Afriman

Can you confirm the thresholds are still the same? As 160GB a week on a 4mb line is a excellent deal. Once normal Afrihost goes back to shaped I am moving to unshaped
