Seems a router reset has normalised things again. I really do need an Interpreting Tracerts 101 course - my knowledge doesn't extend too far beyond 'big numbers are bad'. :o

*edit*

Also, *s are likely also bad.

4 meg line,
Speedtests consistently show 3,2MB/s - 3,4MB/s
Tracert's havve very low ms on local hops to wherever I trace to, and in the 200ms - 300ms range when tracing international.

I can stream youtube videos without buffer lag at 720p, download direct http at about 200kB/s

But when I try to download a torrent file, it's down to disc-brake speeds of 0,1kB/s, and has consistently stagnated at these speeds for over a week now, with only an hour or so sporaticcally going as high as overall maximum of 200kB/s same as http downloads.

Is something going on with the network, is it my line? What's going on. In paranoia I have even switched off my WiFi on the router to see if my connection is not being leached.

My average daily usage was around 20Gb, today, the maximum I have been able to move is 1Gb. Something is not right. I have reset my router hundreds of times, fixed my line, checked my wall sockets, done a rain dance, scratched my head bald and yet, no change.

Last technician call from AH was a week ago and the result was a line reset, which had no effect. What else can I check?

This: "My average daily usage was around 20Gb" might be your issue....maybe you are in the "high usage" segment - at 20Gb a day, thats 600Gigs a month!.....but they are running unthrottled at the moment... I suggest you PM AfriMan and check if they have not started to manage you already.

I thought thresholds and management was a thing of the past...?

Try restricting the number of sinultaneous connections your torrent client can run.
Also restrict upload speed to 10% of your line upload speed and downloads to 80% or so? And see if http improves?

Average monthly is at around 300Gb - fansubs me and my brother watch, youtube streaming, tvportal app from my tablet streams series, steam updates, MMO updates etc.

Average for March is 13Gb.

Granted, the usage is high, so if I'm a high-usage user, at least tell me that I'm being throttled for it. But this is unexplained so its frustrating not to know

Try restricting the number of simultaneous connections your torrent client can run.
Also restrict upload speed to 10% of your line upload speed and downloads to 80% or so? And see if http improves?

Restriction is at between 2 and 4 simultaneous, I experiment constantly to see if it's a seeding/ratio issue. Sometimes another file can connect to someone with a faster upload speed. But overall, the last week or two it doesn't matter if I only have one file downloading, they are near dead. I test now and again with Ubuntu alternative's torrent. It should be well seeded, plus 12.10 is soon to be replaced with 13.04 so I'm guessing ratios should be good, and it's mostly dead too.

I restricted upload to 1kB/s seeing as speedtests show my maximum upload speed is in any event max 20kB/s or something.

EDIT:
I just went up to about 200kB/s overall. This Jackinabox thing is getting annoying.

EDIT 2

and now I'm down to 40kB/s, Maybe its the nature of torrents, people connecting and disconnecting, at least everything else runs relatively fine

Er, files, i probably misread or misunderstood your advice then, what were you suggesting? Global number of connections or number of active downloads?

If I had a proper idea how news thingys worked id probably try them, but from what i understand it's subscriptions and indexes and news servers and what not, i like the click-a-magnet-link-done idea
