Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

That certainly sounds like a challenge. :)

Thanks for the feedback. Highest ratio of P2P traffic doesn't mean the highest P2P traffic if I understand correctly. It could also just mean that other downloads/streaming for South is less than North. So North has a more balanced use with regards to P2P vs other services?

Well JHB does have a bigger IPC than CPT, but has a lot more users routing through it. So were talking in relation to max capacity rather than absolute values.

Can you set up a notification option for uncapped users to say when the network starts experiencing congestion and when there is spare capacity to go wild. A nice API for an ISP to implement that can modify scheduling software would be awesomeness.

For now we have the shaping notice in ClientZone 2.0 but we're definitely open to suggestions. At the end of the day we want you to have control over your products. Can definitely take this up to the powers that be and see if anyone bites :)

On a totally unrelated note - this made my day

At the store where I am working, we have the ADSL line and fax on the same number. Whenever someone sends or receives a fax the ADSL line loses connection. Is there any way of solving this problem?

As you hit the send fax button, your body is propelled through a time wrap to somewhere around the late 80s... a time before ADSL was invented and therefore unable to sync on your line. As soon as the fax has successfully sent, your body is automagically teleported back through the time portal to present day, where ADSL syncs freely and the fruit is only the second most popular type of Apple.

Which reminds me. Android app is lagging with regards to details shown on the clientzone site. Any plans to update the app?

Again, it's not just about crunching numbers and profit vs expense. We have to motivate by throughput for additional capacity. Believe me, we'd like nothing more than to have oodles of IPC at our disposal, but we have to have the throughput to justify it. At present, the off-peak window is the biggest barrier to additional capacity, and our team are doing everything possible to move more traffic through that period, and we're going to do more to encourage all our DSL clients to take advantage of it.

What's the definition of off peak just so i can adjust my downloads?

My main gripe is not P2P, it's when I have to download an app for work or something and on my 4MB uncapped its downloading at 30kb/sec which is ridiculous.

nooo! downloading torrents last night on my 1mbps line - maximum speed of 15kB/s - offpeak speed! Just recently re-joined Afrihost - previously left shortly after they moved to MTN.

Not experiencing 'pure internet joy'!

Cape Town?

I'm getting roughly the same torrent speeds, even after hours. When I last checked it was downloading at 8Kb/s

Maybe offer after-hours top up of R2.50-R3/gb to be used between 10pm and 7am? or even R100 gets you uncapped 2mbps afterhours on Capped accounts?

We are definitely thinking along the lines of incentivising using the network off-peak. Our main concern is that we don't ever want to sell a complicated or restricted product. It should be your to use as you see fit. But we'll sit and have a good think about this, and I'm sure Gian and the team will think of something diabolically awesome :)

We were running some maintenance last night on the shaping system, which did unfortunately cause some irregularities with shaping, i.e. some clients were not unshaped as they should have been. This has been identified and sorted out, so everything should be back to normal. In fact, Cape Town especially should be working awesomely today ;)
