Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Coming back to see how AH network is coping with the all new fantastic IPC I see I (imo) made a great move away.

After all the false promises and stalling I finally changed ISP's. After months of dealing with having to pause YouTube video's i.e. go and make coffee and come back later just to watch a 4 min video (on a "4mb" account in SD) - I can now even stream YouTube now without buffering. Like discovering fire, I'm enchanted. And yes I'm STILL pissed with AH, you basically stole my money for months (the entire period from the move away from IS till one month ago). You often gave me dial up speeds (25kb/s http downloads? Come on!) yet charging me for a 4mb and then later a 2mb account when I downgraded. According to your support it was always a Telkom "issue", or a line reset would fix it. I strangely never have any Telkom issues with my new ISP and to this day after (over a month) have never required or asked for a line/port reset.

If Afrihost just admitted to it's users that your network was b0rked (when you knew it was) I wouldn't still be so angry, but all you did was try and stall or point your fingers at Telkom - like you are doing now. I understand this isn't good for business (admitting your product is fundamentally flawed or oversubscribed), but you still didn't handle it in the right way, by constantly shifting blame.

For example - looking at the newer posts - if the problem is ONLY Telkom related, why are users saying using another ISP's account gives them normal speeds? The line still goes through the same exchange. If the Telkom IPC that is related to YOUR network is broke, however - it's essentially your issue, so start owning up when you have issues with things, and stop shifting the blame or telling people (like I was constantly told) that a line reset will solve all your network's issues - when the top brass know it will do nothing of the sort. If it was purely a Telkom issue (latest issues included), any and all ISP accounts using the same line would suffer, and this isn't (and hasn't been) the case. Other ISP accounts run and authenticate fine, while yours do not.

Because of this you have come across (to me) as deceitful (whether you are or aren't) - and because of that I will never use or recommend you to anyone. Ever.

From my point of view - I paid for and was promised a Ferrari, but all you ever gave me was an old rusted 1400 VW Beetle that broke down at the robots twice a day, who wouldn't be pissed? I was a loyal customer for over 4 years, who over this period spent ten of thousands of rands with you guys.

Yes, I took the time to write all of this because even though I left you guys, I'm still pissed as heck that I paid you every month on time for a service that was advertised falsely. I didn't get what I paid for, yet you took my money each month knowing your network was crap and couldn't handle its subscribers. It just didn't work, and by the looks of it still doesn't.

I'm sorry you feel this way, and clearly you had a very bad experience. I think you've made some very strong statements, and obviously we don't feel that they are in line with our intentions or actions. But the point is, we acknowledge your feelings and we are truly sorry that you feel that way, regardless of how you arrived at those conclusions. The Internet and ISP environment is a complex one, and there are multiple interdependencies between ourselves, our upstream providers and ultimately Telkom. I try to provide as much insight and detail as I can, but I really can't stress enough the level of complexity. Ultimately, as your service provider, we do take responsibility, but we also try provide you with information on what's actually happening.

If you're keen to chat about what happened and how, and what was really going on, I'm always happy to do so. And I think you might also find that we are just normal people, not corporate monsters trying to squeeze money out of our clients by duping them.

Thanks for the post, lots to think about :)

16gigs downloaded yesterday, 9 gigs today on 2mb account. Is Afrihost on steroids?

The SMS is an apology, we updated clients as best we could during the day over social media and here on MyBroadBand. We're of the mind that every bit helps and we understand that some people still feel angry about the issue :(

as mentioned before, I lost 2 hours worth of billing yesterday and I'm sure other people lost out because of the situation as well, those 2 hours were worth more than my monthly subscription to you.

SMS's apologising after the fact are all fine and well, but I think the odd SMS during the course of the day whilst the problem was under way would also have been beneficial, as I'm sure that there are folk out there that don't necessarily have back up systems in terms of internet access to find out what was going on and some posts on this forum indicated that your call centre was flooded too

In other words you want to confuse the hell out of me by sending me an sms to say I should have a problem and if I don't I must call in because I had no problems?

I didn't know this was a business grade package!

A positive from me (PE) on a 4mb uncapped

For the last week latency is great and better than before, throughput is consistent and what I expect (3.6mb), I get SMS's and feedback. So glad I stuck around :)

My personal opinion is AH have gone a long way to appease us: discounts, mystery discounts, numerous apology emails, SMS's and a massive upgrade.

They have also had bad/rough luck with a few outages just at the wrong time, just when things were supposed to look up (EASSY, Telkom IPC etc). Hopefully we are past all that based on the last week for me.

Keep it up though...

what is it lately, normally daytimes slow and night times fast but now its reversed

Test conducted on 14 March 2013 22:13
Download Speed: 1291 kbps (161.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 244 kbps (30.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 285 ms

Just sat now for an hour trying to "fix" my line. From restarting the router to re-syncing my line to upgrading the firmware on my router to clicking on the "fix my line" button on the clientzone. After all this my 10mb line is still syncing at 8032kbps. Not sure what's going on here, but I'm not very impressed...:(

Thanks for being so understanding. We really appreciate the support and patience of so many of our clients. Makes us work twice as hard to ensure that things remain as smooth as possible going forward :)

When you run Fix my line, it sets it to a lower, optimal sync rate for best stable sync. When you run it the second time, it sets it to the maximum rate your line can sync at.

Drop me a PM and we'll see if we can set it to the full 10Mbps. Depends on whether your line can achieve it or not

AfriMan, account is still not connected and cricket starts in less than 40mins :). Will you check again please as per PM. My grandfather and i thank you gracefully :D.

Edit: incase AfriMan is catching some jumpin' ZzZzs , sending support an open ticket :p.

No ADSL for 24 hours and even worse no response from Afrihost support apart from the automated email after logging a ticket. A good support team will always give feedback even if the news is not good. Will pm Afriman to look into it.

Either your line is screwed or your exchange.

Try a trial account from a different ISP to see if it helps.

It sure seems like it helps

Activated an MWEB trial account

Don't know how much it means, but on the speedtest test, that green line running from left to right, on the afrihost account it zig-zags all over the place but on the MWEB account it's almost straight

I've done more test and it's about the exact same result each and every time, but these were the results of the very first 5 test right after I activated the account. Amazingly consistent!
Thoroughly impressed.
This is the kind of results I used to have with afrihost, but now :(

I'm actually streaming a 720p video on youtube while typing this, very little buffering. Less buffering than i have with the afrihost account and a 360p video:confused:
