Afrihost Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

In relation to an account Uncapped 384 kbps DSL: the increments of throttling would be at the 15GB
And my account is currently standing on 16gb!
So goodbye Afrhost!
I'm gonna cancel my account now and I want to get a refund, because nowhere on the AH site I could get info on softcaps regarding 384k!
AND there not throttling me, they've hit the brakes, handbrake and emergency brakes!

Thats the standard cut and paste job most people are getting. Except I haven't noticed the mention of 384 users being throttled at 15GB before. I dont think throttle is the right word. More like your connection will be killed at 15GB. Thats my experience.

So, if you're on a 384 connection and you get 15GB before your internet is murdered, that means you're paying R13.13 per GB. Doesn't look as attractive as R197 for 200GB as we originally thought.

Oh well, I guess we live and learn. I've lost a lot of respect for Afrihost now.

Only in Africa do you get uncapped ADSL with a 15GB cap.

Gian,

I used think Afrihost was a game changer, I really did. I've been involved in the web since the early 90's. When you sent out that email mentioning a proper 4mb uncapped line, I jumped at the chance. The email you sent out to us announcing the 4mb line didn't mention one of the most aggressive bandwidth shaping policies i've seen implemented anywhere (lived in 15 countries, believe me I know what places like China can do to a net connection).

I understand the need to ensure everyone enjoys the pipe, I've been involved in broadband rollouts for BT, PSINet and Comcast so know what happens when a few greedy apples upset the cart. Thing is, I was better off with my 50gb account, right now i've been shaped because I went over 30gb. Your FAQ mentions shaping traffic but fails to mention how long this will be shaped for. This sir, is a con and you know it. Offering a service and THEN changing the t's and c's is poor, even in African standards.

If power users are causing your network to struggle, then create a package that is a power user package. No rubbish marketing, just a flat fee of X amount and we don't touch your line. In all seriousness, even the most aggressive torrent freaks out there will struggle with 150gb a month, so the networks should be able to handle it, if they can't, hire someone with the necessary skills.

You've just lost a big advocate of Afrihost. I've pretty much persuaded countless friends and family to move across to your company but feel this is no longer working. I never thought i'd say this, but MWEB does seem a better offering right now.

I hate to say this but I agree. This has been a very bad experience for me.

Very bad??? I would much rather say extremely bad. I was thinking of moving my website over to them for hosting as well. Scratch that. They are a bunch of criminals.

I sent a email querying my current download speed of 8kb/s... this is my reply....

" Hi there

Trust you are well

Thank you for the mail. I see that you have already moved
20GB on your 384kbps DSL account. On the current account
once you have moved more than 10GB you start getting
throttled. So you have been throttled twice already
which will explain the line speed you are experiencing.
Hope this answers your question.

Thank you and take care
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

Shakeel "

That is absolutely pathetic! They are saying the first throttling happens at 10gig!! I am not a happy chappy.

Got this email from Afrihost,

Hi there Anthony

Trust all is well :)
I see you have a 384k uncapped account. This works in increments of 10gigs.
We are also experiencing network congestion that has been escalated to IS and hopefully will have this resolved soon.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Is this ridiculous or WHAT? A slow 384 line getting throttled.......ok I am going to cancel my account with Afrihost soon....cheers Afrihost....thanks for the lie you told about only throttling after 30gig.

Damn! they're changing their T&C's every 30mins by the looks of things!
Bad service afrihost! very bad!

Whilst responding to twitter is a nice web 2.0 way to go, a more powerful way would be to create a new thread on here, with a poll that shows how many people have decided to vote with their feet.

now that is responding. hitting the business owner where it hurts, the bottom line.

Agreed.

And what about hellopeter.com?

now i have speeds of a 384 line even though i have only downloaded 48GB..

what the frak is going on ?

they keep changing the rules!

LOL, now this is just funny & Sad. I downloaded last night from astraweb from 8pm to 8am and the total download...... 8.4megabytes! 8.4 megabytes in twelve hours!!!! I guess theycan call it uncapped, because "technically" my connection has not shut off, it is just working at about .0002 kb/s.

I'm at 39gb and I'm throttled at 512kbps. This is the final response I got from them this morning:
Hi There,
Trust you are well, Hope you are enjoying the weekend.

Well i'm sorry to say but the system is fully automated and there is nothing we can do to change your throttling degree, but i will bring it up with our dev team and see if there is something wrong with the system.

If you have any further questions please feel free to drop us a mail.
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

Mark
