Afrihost Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

I had a pretty productive weekend in terms of data transfer throughput. From Friday night till last night, I transferred 38.6 GB through a 2MB rate-limited line (31.4 down and 7.2 up)

I set up some basic QoS on my Billion router to allow browsing to function at a reasonable rate for everyone in the household and let rip after that with torrents, RSS feed downloads of image galleries, eMusic downloads, podcasts, XBOX demos and updates.

So, for me, I'm very happy with the product. And yes, I am getting to the point where I have most of what I wanted to download (for now) so my usage will not be extreme in the coming weeks unless friends or family have any special requests. I just like the fact that I don't have to keep an eye on the usage tracker anymore.

Where do you guys all get ur stuff from? I'm currently using torrents - maybe its time to change.

I just like the convenience of clicking download on one file :p

Xrapidx I have moved about 20gb this weekend.... some was normal trailer downloads but I did some torrents to test prolonged speed. This weekend was the first weekend my line reported stable speeds on Speedtest and I got between 150 and 380 kb/s (averaging about 280) via torrents.

Personally Im not a news server man :)

EDIT: To test I looked for a Highly seeded torrent. All my downloads seemed to get avveragely good speeds though...

Download speeds still great! Missed the F1 this morning - it will be downloaded within the hour. 400Kb/s from EN :)

I've given up on the local news servers - international nntp is the way to go!

use international news servers. IS news server sucks in general. The only local news server worthy of anyones time is the SAIX news server.

What international news servers do you guys use? Free ones (which ones?) or pay ones like cheapernews, astraweb etc??

I am pretty happy with their 4meg uncapped product. I only went on afrihost saturday evening coz I cancelled my mweb coz it was shaped to hell and I had no international on saturday for a few hours. Oh, and the mweb uncapped is no longer on saix? and news.mweb.co.za used to point to giganews server. Also, the local only access of the mweb capped accounts couldn't connect to saix either. IS is fine if u ask me, astraweb has been pretty reliable thus far. I'm hardcore into online gaming and afrihost did the trick for me.

Thanks for the advice! :D

Could you give me the details of one or two international news servers? And the port which I should use?

Yeah, I've always used SAIX on my Telkom account and was always very happy with it. Average speeds of 150 kb/s and if something is cached then I would go up to 420 kb/s

did some research and found these two sites: http://usenet__servers.tripod.com/ and http://www.proxy2.de/news.php. Neither say which port to use so I'd suggest working your way through the list till you find one that works (try port 119 which is the most popular one i think?)

good luck

Anyone else getting 384kbps speeds on their 4mbps account in the last 30min?

You will struggle to get a decent free news server.
But most of the pay ones will be good.
I use www.newsdemon.com. Have had no problems at all and it maxes out my line all the time.
It also comes with SSL encryption to hide what you are downloading :)
It costs about R90 a month and is worth every penny.
A good application for downloading is called Newsbin. But there are free ones with less features like Grabit.

Think I'm going to give astrawebs unlimited $15 a month account a try tonight.

Will I be bale to continue using Altbinz with Astraweb? How does the whole process work when I pay? Do they give me the names of the servers to use in my news reader and authenticate my IP on their servers? Sorry for the n00b questions - only ever used SAIX before, which is free, so all I had to do was enter the server address and the port

When you register you will get a username and password.
Server names and ports are available on their site.
Check out the link i posted on the last page for newsdemon.
Its only $10.95 per month for unlimited downloads with 50 SSL connections and was voted best news server in the US last year.

Just signed up for uncapped 4mb. For years I've had my router setup so that I use dial ups to connect to the net. Anyone know what I need to change in the settings to make the router do the dialing automatically, as I've heard that the Afrihost uncapped doesn't allow my dialing connections.

What router do you have?
You have to change from bridged mode to PPPOE mode on the router.
