Afrihost - what a waste so far

i know im not l33t enough :/

all im saying is im not gonna throw a hissy fit if i dont get my gig, but atleast this thread gets some exposure and the next person doesnt get caught out by their T and C's so its only me who lost not the next oke !

i think MyBB needs to go back to 2006, its become very L33t3st (i r the Fr4g k!ng)

saying they on par is like saying that the golf GTi can keep up with a Lambo :P

ya cause i stole there BW, cause they dont get hourly updates ;) Amazing if this was Telkom you people would all be having a big fuss, because its like your beloved ISP its ok.

I dont even use them, nor telkom. Issue is that you over spend and make it someone elses fault?

sigh as i thought. South African attitudes,

I see laziness to check your own usage and failure to take responsibility for your own stupidity in that category as well. ;)

You weren't caught out. You never read the T&C. Have you read it and not understand it fully, or it was vague, you could have claimed to have been caught out.

Hope you take more care in future now though. One doesn't sign a contract before you know what you actually signing. :)

4cer : you're on a high horse here that unfortunately has no legs to stand on.

You used bandwidth, and bought a topup which covered the bandwidth you'd used, so now that amount won't be deducted from your next months "cap".. I fail to see how you've experienced any crap or lost out in anyway.

Nice sweeping generalisation there... by "you" I hope you don't mean everyone that has responded to you as you will find it difficult to find a post on this forum where I have criticised Telkom....

i think ill find it hard to find a post from you on the forum that isnt against what everyone else thinks generally. you like to go against the flow, its ok some people can be different, doesn't mean its useful though.

and how must i check this if they dont even know ? there T and C must then state that "please purchase net limiter for $19.95 when getting an account cause we can't control what you use, so its up to you."

just saying every other ISP has managed to cap me just fine.

@ Web Africa they're able to monitor your usage better than Axxess or Afrihost due to both those companies getting their bw from IS and not SAIX as WA currently does. That, without having to reset your connection (12 hour or 24 hour) to get stats.

I also haven't seen them, when I on occassion do 100-200mb more than my limit, take that bandwidth used off of a topup I purchased.

read up like a few posts! this is mainly a warning so no one else gets caught out. Yes you might not say 'caught out" but i promise its gonna happen to other people, and they can rather save there money.

In support of 4cer although he did use what he is being charged for Afrihost states that you would be capped when you reach your limited. During some earlier discussion Gian stated that the system allowed for minor overuse which would be deducted from your following month. He also stated that due to an error on their side some customers had not been capped when they should have been and had incurred more substantial overuse. If I am not mistaken he did offer to reverse this overuse as it had been allowed due to their error.

I think 4cer's point he is trying to make is that Afrihost shouldn't be allowing you to exceed your cap in the first place. Afrihost's AAA system should be communicating with the NAS more frequently to avoid this from happening.

Well that was not really a "eureka" moment there by you as I myself have admitted on more than one occasion that I will hardly ever respond to a post which says what I totally agree with. If I am going to take the time to post on a topic I clearly need to have an opinion on it otherwise why bother? I am not the "+1" type.

But it's fine I understand that you realise you are in the wrong in the instance mentioned in your OP.

Agreed, I think the system is flawed when you compare to Axxess and other ISP's.

If we pay for a gig then we shouldnt be able to go over and then be expected to pay for it

thats like a petrol station giving you 60L's but you can only use 10, and if you go back with an empty tank they charge you for the 50L... little backward.

i dont mind if the overusage was like 100 or so megs, but how slow is it ?

Ok well so far my experience has been a bleak one.

Firstly i didnt know about the over usage going into next month so on the first i was capped. So i thought, ok fine ill just let it go ill know from next month.

e-mail after i topped up :/

can any ISP using either SAIX or IS monitor usage live (per MB) or are resets required?

if only resets, then i suppose it's a balance between regular resets and being billed for over-usage (or it being deducted)

I would hope that an ISP would give some indication once one is near or over your cap... webafrica was fairly good with that

I remember being SMSed by Afrihost when I was near my limit.

In any case, you agreed to the T&cs stating that any overused bandwidth would be deducted so ya..

You received notification didnt you? Im sure any user that's connected to the internet 24/7 would like to have some control of their usage.

All im trying to say is, don't blame the company because you failed to read their terms. (as said in your first post, you didnt say those exact words, but have you read the, you would have known).

ISP's are there to make money. That's how i see it. There's no such thing as an ISP for the people. This offer was given to lure customers, and it worked. It benefits the customer, so great going to them! But don't expect the service to be perfect or not to have some kind of "catch". We are way too gullable especially in the current state of our local broadband services, so we don't go in cautiously, and get burned. Human nature makes us jump to find excuses to not be blamed for our own "silliness".

ok thats enough of me now. :p

ps. 4cer, hope youre more careful in the future. :)

And of course you phoned their support to help you sort this out or come to some form of an agreement?

Or did you just launch some mindless rant to prove that you did not even bother to resolve this issue with them first?

4Cer I am with you on this one, they should have let you know you went over you cap....or am I missing something here. Isnt that why there is a cap in the first place
How can you go over your cap?

If he used some obscure email account to sign up which he never checks then it is not Afrihosts fault :

Dear

We trust that you are well!

Please note that your account (....) has
used 96% of the bandwidth that is included
with your 5 GB package.

The 5 GB package includes 819.20 MB of
traffic and you have used 789.18 MB so far.
Please note that you will also receive a notification for each of
your "TopUp Bundles"

We calculated that you have a total of 819.200 MB bandwidth
(including all of your additional TopUp Bundles purchased) available for
this period and have used a total of 789.177 MB so far.

What does this mean for you?

Once you have reached 100% your account will become unusable until
the 1st of next month. To avoid having your account suspended, please
login to your Client Zone and purchase a TopUp Bundle.

You can check your bandwidth that your site has moved
at any time by logging into your Client Zone at
http://clientzone.afrihost.com

If you have any questions regarding any of this please let us know

Have a great day further!

Well, I am very happy with all my dealings with them to date.

Even with other ISP's I have learnt to monitor my BW usage so I do not have problems.

I do hope that as they get sorted out as an ISP that their capping would improve and that we can only go over by a small percentage.

But at the price I am paying I can live with the odd hassle as my previous (and much more expensive) ISP gave me far more hassles.
