We’re excited to announce the launch of Pure 5G, which is going live tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 October.

Pure 5G is Afrihost’s own Fixed 5G offering and runs on the MTN network. Partnering with MTN means we can offer more expansive network coverage to our clients - as an affordable alternative to Fibre and DSL.

Our packages offered on Pure 5G will be uncapped. All Pure 5G Uncapped packages are subject to a monthly threshold of 1TB. Once you’ve reached your monthly data limit, your connection speed will be limited to 1Mbps for the remainder of the month.

Important notes
Only supported CAT6 devices will work on the MTN 5G Network. This range of devices includes:

HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2
ZTE 5G CPE MC801A

Please note that Pure 5G will only work on the above-approved devices. If you insert your SIM card into a device that MTN has not approved, the SIM card will be blocked, and the client will lose internet access. The client will then have to contact our Support team to get the SIM card unblocked.

I will share the link to the available packages tomorrow.

@Afrigirl

This might be a stupid question, but in the event that something goes wrong with 5G in the area will it fall back onto LTE?

I have noticed 5G outages in my area recently, but is usually restored quickly. I don't want to get this package and have to deal with disconnections due to LTE not being available as a fail over.

If it's strictly 5G only then this might be a no-go for me, for now at least.

Actually asked them about this, this is what they had to say:
  • We cannot comment on this as the 5G network is managed by MTN and not Afrihost.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just strange that Afrihost would announce and launch a new product but they themselves do not even know all the finer details.

@Afrigirl - Possible to confirm whether LTE would work as a fail-over if 5G goes down? Surely MTN would be able to provide Afrihost with the answer? Thanks.

Seeing as it is the same product that Axxess resells, the same rules normally applies:

Calling soft capped uncapped. Come on Afrihost, have we not been abused by marketing mumbo jumbo for too long?
1TB soft cap and then throttled to 1mbps? That is heavy shaping for a 5G product. I would say a 2TB soft cap and then throttled to 10mbps - then you can at least still stream... would have sound more reasonable. My household burn through 1TB+ within a week on my 200mbps fiber connection - that is streaming, downloading/updating games on Steam and XBOX, Youtube etc, and general web browing. This product will not last us a week - then it is worthless...

Hi, yes it will fall back to Fixed LTE if 5G fails. Our APN will also be fixed wireless APN, so it sees it as Fixed wireless that can do 5G if in coverage.

I fall out of coverage by probably a 100m or so. Would it be worth the risk to try it?

And also i am like 500m away from the Telkom exchange that have a generator for the 2TB LTE that i am currently using. Signal never dies.

Hi, it is not worth it. it will always be detected as out of range, causing the sim to be blocked.
