Aggressive ADSL pricing from new player

I honesty read the title of this thread and thought "yes, finally an ISP I can get behind and be content that I'm paying prices that don't sting too badly".

Now I'm just annoyed. The use of the word "aggressive" is hardly justified.

I'll stick with Axxess, the saving of R2 a gig is not worth risking poor quality of service.
 
Is there anyone that can compete with the Telkom Do Package 3 at the minute? R554 for line rental as well as 5 gigs (as of next month) and 30 gig local?

Unless I am horribly mistaken that package specifically works out to +-R140 bucks for 5gigs + 30 gig local? That is taking away the R413 line rental.

*edit, this is merely a question. I am not trying to create flame.

A little more meat in the article explaining the part that IS plays in this game may have helped people's perceptions.

It looks like there is some competition forming up between Internet Solutions and Telkom ISP. A move that I have been waiting for for a really long time. And ... I DO mean a really long time.

I am planning to move all my shaped ADSL requirements to Telkom next month because of this.
But, their whole "expiry date" problem is a factor that is holding me back big time.
Expired unused bandwidth is useless to me, and I find the end-of-the-month crunch deplorable.
Also ... final word on whether the local-only-once-capped allocation will still be part of the product has not materialised from the mouth of Telkom.

There is definitely more competition in the wholesale side of things. If you speak to ISPs I think you will hear that there are price cuts on a wholesale level to gain business from the smaller service providers. It is also not uncommon to see some ISPs moving over to IS from SAIX or at least offering both types of accounts – good news.
 
I really don't think it's because people like to moan - only that the prices from ISPs were not really (that much of) a problem. The line rental and the amount of gigs is more important than the actual price. I mean how much cheaper do we want the internet to be? Seriously? R59 is ridiculously cheap in terms of money alone - compared per gigabyte to a person who is on uncapped (with Axxess @ R899) who uses approximately 100 gigs a month it's still high. Oh yes - 100 gigs is not that much when you account for everything the internet has to offer.
 
rpm or... anyone willing to explain the cost make-up of our data/bandwidth portion of our ISP bill.... I hear about telkom and the local loop all the time, but how does that affect ISP pricing and why can it not be bypassed using any of the wireless technologies?
 
Wireless is cheaper in the rest of the world they just make money of us and for some reason I have been wondering what if... Mybb is really being run by telkom!

We shouldn't be paying per GB really. I mean, ISPs don't rent space on a per GB basis, therefore why are we charged per GB, that is something I never really understood. If it is to discourage over-usage then I'm afraid it doesn't work. I use my connection as much as I need to and want to and nothing more. I don't use a lot of bandwidth, and whether or not my connection were uncapped probably wouldn't affect me at this point in my life, but it still annoys me.
 
For unshaped Axxess's R55 a gig is unbeatable...after hours of course....
but that's the only time i use it! Give us more of these bunldes!!!

Agree'd. 100%.
But, I don't know where the "Per Gigabyte" part is added.
Is it added onto the Telkom / IS reseller package, or do the ISP's add it?

That's the big question.

You hit the nail on the head. Reseller ISP's are not undercutting Telkom, not by any stretch of the imagination. That Telkom can be both wholesale provider to ISPs and consumer retailer is a massive conflict of interest.

But people are not going to boycott a service that offers them the best deal. The only way that Telkom's stranglehold will be broken is if there are a cheaper alternatives available. A point we have yet to reach.

LLU would also go a long, long way to felling the beast. We live in hope.

And where is Neotel? Why is Neotel not competing in the ADSL market?
 
I think there is much dishonesty in this forum and most are hiding behind what they really do with the internet. I don't know anything about games so I cannot judge how much download is used but I cannot see what most are downloading. All I can think of is adult material. So if you hire a movie of that nature it about R50. At about R50 a gig you getting much more value then at Adult World.

You obviously have never downloaded an OS ISO and didn't download the Win7 RC1 or Beta. Ever downloaded a single file that is over a gig? There are plenty of things out there that are not pornography that are large downloads.

Streaming international radio anyone?

Excuse my ignorance and 90% of others I have no idea what OS ISO Win7 RC1and Beta are, nor did any of the ten people around me. Maybe its me? Am I the only non geek thats reads thses posts?
