Hi

So I'm considering to switch from iBurst to Afrihost.
What are the cost I must consider other than the package of Afrihost?
Is it possible to only get a adsl line, so in other words, I pay R152 for 384 line, plus the R58 for Afrihost?

Yes, and there is also an installation cost unless you choose the self install option.

So it is...

1) Once off installation cost
2) Monthly Telephone line rental + ADSL line rental (depends on speed chosen)
3) Monthly ISP cost from Afrihost.

Thanks Gary.

So, if the ADSL line is R152 for 384kbps, how much is the telephone line rental then?

Thanks Devviem, I've been dying to ask those questions.

Also, is the 384 line good enough for gaming & xbox live?
384 will work fine for gaming on Xbox Live, provided you don't host the game yourself cos then it'll crawl a bit. But joining existing games is fine.

Oh and budget around R900 for a decent router (personal bias, buy a Billion) :D

FYI, if you take a closer plan you don't have the once off installation cost. However, the closer plan does come with bandwidth and stuff added onto it, but you do have the option to cancel the closer plan immediately (just make sure they don't sign you into a 24 month contract)

You guys forget the ADSL router ;) That is another cost you need to consider. However, you get cheap ones out there and it works on all ADSL networks, not just one (unlike wireless companies do)

If you want a cheap option with decent speed you might want to consider Telkom Wimax. With Telkom Wimax it's as if you have a ADSL line (you get a DSLAM port and everything) and it's 512kbps for R240 a month. No line rental. So about R90 more expensive than a 384kbps line (line rental is R131 AFAIK)

Then you can use any ADSL account (including afrihost) as your bandwidth provider.

In total, the wimax solution is:

1) R544 once off installation cost
2) R240 month to month (no contract) for 512kbps
3) Afrihost ;)

If you want to replace routers every few months then yes, billion. If you want a reliable router, Netgear DG834G. Cheaper than R900 (if you buy at prophecy.co.za) and other than lightning, won't let you down.

Odd, that was my experience with Netgear but my Billion has been going strong :/

And yeah they could go with Netgear if they want to go through the hassle of endless buggy firmware updates and no (or broken) half-bridge support on that particular model.

get aztech router for under 1000 got tons of features and wifi and never had a problem with it had it over a year now

Okay let me calculate this.

R152 384kbps
R131 Telkom voice line rental
R145 5GB package from Afrihost

= R428

Excludes modem and ADSL instalation.

Very weird, I've only had Netgear and the only reasons why it gave me **** was because the lightning hit it out, and even then 2 out of the 4 ethernet ports worked so I could still connect even though it dropped the connection due to fried circuits every now and then :)

But yea, weird. Where did you buy yours?

Yup, and remember, Telkom levies the first month based off of 2 payments. So assuming your installation charges are free, your first month's bill will look like this:

R308 ADSL (pro-rata depending on the time of the month)
R131 (assuming you already pay that anyway)
R145 Afrihost

In total, the wimax solution is:

1) R544 once off installation cost
2) R240 month to month (no contract) for 512kbps
3) Afrihost ;)

That's very attractive, I don't wanna pay Telkom R131 for line rental.

/ Runs to go checkup what Telkom Wimax is

Darn, my area supports ADSL upto 4 mbps...:p

So I can't get Telkom Wimax.

WiMAX is a fixed wireless broadband connection as opposed to mobile wireless, WiMAX offers broadband over a radius not greater than 30km from the WiMAX tower.

The WiMAX customer will receive similar access to an ADSL subscriber, as the indoor unit determines the range of the signal the same way an ADSL Wifi enabled modem does.

Where Telkom cannot offer a DSL or do broadband package due to the exchange area that you reside in not being ADSL enabled you will be offered a WiMAX based solution instead.

If your area is not DSL enabled, please call 10217 so that we can see if your area is covered by the WiMAX footprint.
