All cost for ADSL

On that point can someone confirm the following costs for a 4mbps line?
R131 - Telkom line rental
R413 - 4mbps DSL
=R544 line fee

Then, I need to add in my ISP fee - eg Afrihost @29/GB.

The Do Closer 3 includes all Telkom costs, 5GB data & 1300 free minutes to landlines for R887 - so I'm paying R343 for 5GB data and 1300 minutes. That's probably quite decent...
 
anyway why you paying for telkom line rental we dont here all we pay is the 4 mbit line rental and the adsl account and the phone calls
 
Got a mix of routers -

1. a Cisco router (uncapped at work) no issues so far.
2. a Telkom-branded router with 4 ports (the model after the disastrous Macaroni router) - also no issues so far (work)
3. Also, a Telkom-branded 5102G router with wifi - no problems so far, except that it sometimes hang on a reboot. (home)
4. A billion adsl router installed on site - no problems so far.

Oh, all of them works with Smoothwall too :D

Now... back to the topic.

I think it is a "skande" that Telkom still includes line rental when the adsl fee should cover that... :rolleyes:
 
I see one can get the Telkom Closer 5 for R684 - this includes all the benefits of the Do Closer 3, except for the 5GB ISP account. So f I take this option and get an Afrihost account I can get 7GB on a 4mbps line for the same cost as Do Closer 3?

Am I right?
 
anyway dont think i ever been paying normal line rental i'll check later anyway if i'm not you guys are being cheated :P

As I understand it you pay for the Telkom line as well as for the ADSL usage thereof. Let me know if I'm wrong.

*The monthly rental excludes phone line rental. on website says same as what you said

I ordered ADSL last month in anticipation of all the talk of lower prices and to take Advantage of that when it happens as is the case now with Afrihost.
I went into the telkom shop and ordered my tel line first and once done then ordered the DSL part (384kbps line) I did specify that i wanted the closer2 option which would save me the installation fee. When i called in to query the installation date i found out that it was going to be a normal installation and not as i requested a closer2 option. So requested again and told the person from Telkom to make a note on the system to rectify this , called again to double check that the 1st person had indeed done as i requested.

Now i get my Telkom account and it amounts to R848.45 :confused::mad:
Broken down as follows:

Rental R174.22
Usage R159.47
Service fees R410.57
subtotal R744.26
vat R104.20
total R848.45

I have my own router and was using axxess prepaid 1GB vouchers

Where they get those figures from i dunno but someone @ Telkom didn't do as i requested !!

Called the accounts dept to query and complain - it's now a wait and see what happens.

Like I've said before and I will say again. Telkom charges you twice the first month. I thought this was general knowledge by now?

Not in this case. The delta is the service fees, not rental or usage.

Hah! With telkom? I was told, after my modem daffed out, 1 month after the 12 month warranty on a 2 year contract, that I would have to buy another modem. Fine, missed the deadline by 1 month...

I was then told that telkom does not allow self install anymore. I thus had the techie come round and do it. Problem is, he did not know how...!!!!

I told him it's ok, and sent him off, after having spent 5 minutes being worthless, to get on with another job. I did it myself in a few minutes.

Telkom thus made me self install, at a price of around R500.

I enquired at telkom as to whether the costs can be removed, since they could confirm with the techie, that he did not have the ability to install it.

They said, no, it does not matter. It's their policy and I should have asked for another techie to come out and do it, even if it meant waiting a few days.

Makes you wonder...
 
Can somebody confirm if this is correct. I am with WB and want to change over to Afrihost. My total monthly cost is:

R152 (telkom line rental) + R145 (5 Gig package) = R297 total per month? ... so no other costs?
 
No, you're not including "phone line rental" unless you already pay that anyway like most people.

Ok I'm a little confused. My telkom bill indicates rental @ R149.12.
R114.91 (Tel line) + R34.21 (Closer option 2) = R149.12

Then I pay WA R271 bucks a month for the 2 gig package. So where am I missing "phone line rental"?

Then, when you order a Do1, 2 or 3, or no Do package at all, you will be charged R152, for the "ADSL service", on that line, in order to use it for internet access.
