All things Shelly

Wtf is happening in here, reading the first few pages of the thread actually had me thinking I should try the stuff despite me actually liking the sonoff stuff, then bam wtf
Yep, things were chugging along nicely... and then it turned to the Dark Side with "dudes" crawling out the woodwork attacking all things Sonoff.

I was freaking out for a moment here, thought I missed out. I recently purchased about 350 EUR of Shelly stuff (dimmers, H&Ts, relays, EM) and really like it. I see whatever might have been on Takealot is no longer on there and I would hope that they would have told me about a local reseller if there was one.

I also got one Shelly Bulb (RGB), but I really don't like this one. It's not bright, the warm white is quite blue and I found RGB lighting as useful as I expected - nice, but what for. :)

Also note that ShellySA has never linked to the official site for anything, it's always a link to some AWS storage. The shelly.cloud site is really good and all their images and PDFs appear to be hosted under the same domain, not just links to AWS.

Now, my main concern: I assumed I would play with these for a while and then get an electrician to "install" them so that insurance will pay out if my house burnt down. Is the lack of an ICASA sticker going to be a problem? These things are better quality than some of the plain old light switches I bought locally, never mind the electronics inside.

Grew up near a place called shelly beach, there used to be a lot of shells but the shellys picked them all up and took them back to the transvaal.

Hi Aessa,

Uncertified electronics, as is the case with Shelly micro relay switches will unfortunately not be covered by home owners insurance

The rgb bulb is a bit underwhelming.
The Rgb brightness being between 200 and 244 lumens.
The white being 750 to 800 lumens.

The Shelly duo (colour temp) and vintage bulbs are far more brighter, due to chip size and greater form factor.

Has anyone reported this to their mothership?

I got this today:
"""Yes, ShellySA is our representative. At the moment, they are working on the issues with ICASA. <short snip for safety>

Everything will be organized soon.

Thank you for your time in advance!

Kind regards,
Shelly Support Team
"""

Now, I like Shelly (for the month I've known them), but they need to figure out how to enter our market properly.

So far it has not gone well and the less than stellar English paired with dodging certain questions has not helped. Perhaps they need to first sort out all this legal fluff, have a takealot store online and then start posting here again. Ideally shelly.cloud should mention shellyza.cloud (I don't do facebook, but I look there for release notes so maybe mentioning the ZA rep there would help). Better yet, there should be no mentions of shellyza.cloud, since I don't see shellyus.cloud or other variants for the few I tried. Or, work with local trusted businesses who already tried to become authorised importers rather than seemingly bypass them.

I guess I have a thing for Sofia in Bulgaria, since Inoreader is also from there. :)

And presumably there response was from Bulgaria? Not this local lot?

The whole sub domain thing is exactly what seemed fishy all along.

Yes, I went via the form on https://shelly.cloud/contact (which I used a few times asking for info, features and even sent my CV :p).
I asked ShellySA some questions and got some answers. One or two seemed a bit generic (like a launching-in-third-world plugin). They/he/she said they live in South Africa and shellyza.cloud is expected to be a CDN for shelly.cloud (I don't think that this really how it works and doesn't justify creating separate contact channels).

So, I guess the question for me is how much do you differentiate between someone who is actually part of a foreign company and someone who merely got a "yeah whatever" green light to use their marketing material and brand name.

Just for reference, the public whois info:

Code:
Creation Date: 2020-02-28T13:56:50Z
Registrant Organization: Total Willis Trading Pty Ltd
Registrant State/Province:
Registrant Country: ZA

This probably doesn't mean anything, but they certainly didn't take a lot of time getting things in place before posting here.

It was a bit silly jumping in so soon, as I think their 'rep' has lost a fair amount of credibility here...

I guess they also learnt the hard way about our local certifications

Is there anything to make a "dumb" fan smart?
Controlling speed etc
I've used the sonoff ifan3 to control my fans. They came with normal remotes. I have also tried it with a fan without a remote and it works too. I posted it in the smartkit thread a while back.

@SmartKit - do you know if the Shelly's have IEC 60950 certification? I can't seem to find anything on their website. ICASA certification is mostly a formality, but IEC 60950/62368-1 are the ones speaking about safety.
I'm looking for an alternative the Sonoff-Mini, preferably something that uses 230 V on the external switch interface. As far as I know the Shelly 1 uses 230 V, as opposed the Mini that uses 3.5 V.

Hi @Tacet
Shelly is IEC 60950 approved, and conforms to CE standards in the EU as well as UL listings for the US and Canada.
Shelly is not yet ICASA (TA certified)

Shelly 1, is DC and AC (12 to 240 volt)

Here's a power schematic
