He's now looking at a genset to accompany the current setup as the Solar option is +/-R80k

You really only start to appreciate it when you have solar panels and generating your item electricity.

Every kWh or unit generated by the solar panels is one that's not bought from Eskom or the municipality and that R80k will seem like nothing in a few years.

Generator might be the cheaper option but fuel prices are not going to come down and its will be much more expensive.

If he had the roof space then even starting with a few panels is better.

If he has the inverter and battery adding panels is the easier (cheaper part). He could get 5kWp for about R30k.

Sadly, they hardly have stock of any panels at their Cape Town branch.
I'm also looking at adding panels to my 5kw Sunsynk & 1 Hubble. Was thinking 6 x 540/545w to start of with as budget is very tight (tiled roof). Would it be possible for R40k or would R50k be more realistic?

540W panels are R3700 a pop, which makes 6 of them R22 200. Then depending on what you already have you need cabling, combiner box and mounts. I'd say R30k is doable. R40k easily.
 
I'm stilll amazed they did my installation in a day....arrived 9am - left around 8pm and we were up and running, granted - they charged a fortune, and arrived with a big team.

That's really good service, nice! Only a few people I've heard of with stories like that, mostly it drags on for weeks with this delay and that out of stock, etc.!
 
Think of getting a 5Kw sunsynk inverter and battery back up but issue is I am renting and the place is relatively small (2 bed / 2 bath). The DB is in the kitchen which connects to the tv / living room. What is the noise like when the system is running and will it be to noisy if mounted on the wall not in a cupboard ?

I have the 5KW Sunsynk and it doesn't make any noise - probably because it doesn't have a fan. Just make sure it's well ventilated.

If it’s behind a door should be no problem.

If it’s all open plan it would still be better than listening to all the alarms going off and generators pumping in the neighbourhood.

I’m two rooms away from my 8kW now with the doors opens and with normal ambient noise I can’t hear anything.

Yeah its open plan so will be mounted on a wall
