Hi Guys,

There are quite a couple of us that still use Afrihost as an ISP. Things are not working properly as you know and all we have been getting is promises.

Can you guys please recommend alternative ISPs in South Africa who provide consistent high quality service?

I have a 4 Mbps line and I use a capped account. I am not really interested in torrent downloads. The line is used for business purposes during the week. Therefore Windows and IOS updates need to work well. Software product downloads from formal vendors need to work well. RDP/VPN sessions and video conferencing need to work well. If I would like to watch training videos or movies (after 6PM on weekdays or weekends) these need to work well.

Can you please post information such as:
1.)Who the ISP is that you use and recommend.
2.)What do you like about this ISP?
3.)What do you dislike about this ISP?
4.)How long have you been with the ISP?
5.)What package do you recommend?
6.)Any other useful information.

Thanks

1.)Who the ISP is that you use and recommend.
Telkom LTE - Month-to-Month sim only. Don't take a 24 month contract to get a R1k (second hand) router!

2.)What do you like about this ISP?

Decent LTE speeds, low latency. Cost effective.
Best part: Multi-Sim - I have 3 simcards linked to the same data package. (extra R9pm/sim)

3.)What do you dislike about this ISP?
It's ****ing Telkom. Billing is rocket science to understand. If you are not smart, you can get cornered into a 2 year contract and be stuck with their often lacking customer service.

4.)How long have you been with the ISP?
On-and-off: Years. At times just DSL line only. Mobile division - this is my 3rd month after throwing in the towel on Afrihost.

5.)What package do you recommend?
100GB + 100GB LTE (Month-to-Month. Page 16 of current deals mag). - R999.
50GB + 50GB LTE if you are lighter user. R699.

6.)Any other useful information.
I stream HD content and torrent and browse on multiple devices without any issues in Pinelands, Cape Town. Torrents run consistently 2+ Mbps. No problems with VoIP and low latencies, but I do not game on there.

Vox or CrystalWeb Business capped.

Life is too short to be paying to test someone else's network.

VoX or Crystal Web.

Hands down the best two ISPs at the moment. Both them have offerings that just work. You know, the way the internet should.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. This is exactly the sort of information we are looking for. I have also received some Private Messages to look at Crystal Web, Web Africa and VOX. It would be interesting if people can answer the above questions for these ISPs.

Can you please post information such as:

1.)Who the ISP is that you use and recommend.- I use Afrihost, and still recommend them, but only on their capped products. I stay away from uncapped products from all ISPs, unless it is a business uncapped account.

2.)What do you like about this ISP? - I like the pricing, website (simple and informative), product simplicity, support structures, ClientZone (just brilliant, esp. if you migrate your line to Afrihost), Android app, their presence on MyBroadband (forums and Disqus comment thread), constant competitions, giveaways, promos, etc.

3.)What do you dislike about this ISP? - The network has its issues from time to time, but I find that capped accounts are less affected by these issues. Hence why I stay away from all home uncapped accounts.

4.)How long have you been with the ISP? 4-5 years, on and off, since R29 per GB was launched. I've tried WebAfrica and MWEB for a couple months each, but always came back to Afrihost, relieved and overjoyed to return. WebAfrica is quite good, but I don't like the way their products are structured. They'll sell you a 300GB package, but is like 90GB peak and 210GB offpeak. Offpeak data is useless to me as 90% of my usage is for video streaming.

5.)What package do you recommend? I recommend you migrate your line Afrihost, and stick with a capped package. A high cap (100GB+) package is way better than uncapped, if your monthly usage is reasonable. After about 400GB monthly usage, uncapped becomes cheaper. Afrihost capped bundles (line + data) are still the cheapest in the market, even after Telkom and Vox reduced prices recently.

6.)Any other useful information. I've heard good things about Vox. I will probably try them out sometime soon.

1) Crystal Web Capped Business or Vox FatPipe
2) Their networks work, they don't have smoke and mirror POC networks.
3) Nothing at the moment
4) 6 months? I'm not sure.
5) Business Capped on CW, FatPipe on Vox
6) Moving to CW or Vox shouldn't be a question. They work. In the future they might get problems, but then you deal with it then.

1 - VOX
2 - Stable low latency to EU. Streaming is just about perfect. In short...it just WORKS
3 - Honestly I think their website could be made a bit more user friendly. The products itself are nothing short of amazing!
4 - About 3 months now
5 - Fatpipe + maybe a fatpipe lite+bolt-on (I use the bolt-on mainly for streaming)
6 - n/a

2 people most of the time. Sometimes there may be an extra person. I normally try to download updates once (where possible using various mechanisms) and then distribute internally. This conserves bandwidth. I do the same with product downloads. Movies are normally downloaded via services such as iTunes or BoxOffice. I must be honest though, this happens seldom because of available free time. It would just be fantastic to walk up to the relevant device if I do get time and have the service stream without any issues.

If it's streaming you need then the Crystal Web network is probably your ideal companion. It's designed for this requirement...;)

you say you stream HD content, does the 100GB's last you for the month, or do you have to top it up? If you dont mind me asking :)

Vox is nice, but why the is it R1700 for a setup fee? I don't understand what the fee is for.

It says so on the page:

That's business uncapped which means you get a managed router.

If you want uncapped from VOX, Home is fine, just take an account that's double your line speed to make up for the low thresholds. They are still unshaped.

that applies to uncapped only.

I believe he is on afrihost capped, in which case the Vox fatpipe products would suit him nicely, and are not speed dependent.
