Amazon already challenging Takealot

Sheesh, goodbye any SA competition.

Buss gave the example of its expansion into Australia in 2017, where it gradually ramped up its operations to a point where nothing could compete with it.

At its launch in Australia, Amazon offered 7.5 million products on its platform, and within five years, this had increased to over 200 million. In the process, it became the dominant eCommerce player in the country.

Meanwhile.... Walmart (who already has a foothold in South Africa) is left in the shadows....
 
The biggest and main reason why I end up having to order from Amazon or Temu is, I don't find what I'm looking for on Takealot. The stuff I can get on Takealot, I do order from them as it is quicker and cheaper than Amazon shipping. I spend usually one to two days searching locally across websites. It could be our local sites are really bad at listing their items.

Some items I've not ordered from Takealot were because the descriptions were really bad (yes I know it is the seller and not Takealot) but if quantities, weights, USB versions, etc are not clear, I don't order. I've given up giving feedback on these as Takealot just says it is the sellers problem. So a lot of this is self-inflicted by sellers and Takealot.

For example, if I'm going to buy Viridian supplements off Takealot, I first checked with Viridian SA if those were their genuine products, before I ordered. I have zero trust in Takealot doing any quality control.

If I look at both Amazon and Temu, their clothing comes with all sorts of detailed measurements and templates so you can check if it will really fit. Takealot? Just S, M, L, XL. So yes, clearly we do need more competition as our local market has been too complacent.

TaL's biggest mistake was to become a general store instead of one that stocks all the tech items. Back in the Take2 days they made a profit at least.

I dunno, this isnt really a good comparison at all

Walmart came in guns blazing with no ****ing idea how the African brick and mortar retail sector works
Bought up stores left right and center
Brought in a whole bunch of American and other imports into the C suite to run their operations (who had no idea how Africa works and so no idea how to run the business)
Totally screwed the pooch and ended up with mass retrenchments, consolidation of their operations, and finally having to sell 65+ stores to Shoprite

Amazon is eCommerce. All they need is a warehouse and people to sell to. I give it 2 years and they will be at the level of Takealot or above.
Their offering is just better, since they have more money and have had longer to refine all their ops and processes
Wait till they offer prime here with same day shipping. Takealot will bleed when you can order **** from Amazon at 8AM and get it at 4PM same day.

I'm not quite convinced. Walmart had all of the buying power which was a local concern actually. They only needed to leverage that. Looks more like they didn't understand retail.
 
Take a Lot is Toast burning.

They failed to capitalise on the first mover advantage.

Just like how Telkom failed to take advantage of Asymmetrical interconnect rates. Too late to cry now that its gone.

One Beautiful thing about South African CEOs is they never listen to the customer.

Where i work i have a direct facility for the customers to talk to us. We need your input. Most important business tool.

It's not just Amazon dot com but all the Amazons. Plenty of products on . uk or . fr and especially .co. jp

Shipping can occur directly or via way of freight forwarders, such as Tenso. Their DHL rates are not so bad and the Yen is pretty cheap these days.
 
I still don't get it though. What's the fuss about?

Hasn't Amazon been shipping to SA since forever?
