Amazon already challenging Takealot

so who is #1 and #2, and where do the others fit in?

Amazon has expanded their Global Shipping. In the past Amazon only sold CDs, books and DVDs/blurays internationally and if you wanted to import something you had to use a service like MyUS. Also stuff was sent usually with SAPO and if you wanted to ship with FedEx it cost a lot more.

What's more is that many of these items would not be purchased anyway. Amazon sells US Region 1 DVDs and Region A blurays. South Africa is Region 2/ region B. Our players would not play these discs, unless you have a modded player or used software. So many people would not use Amazon anyway.

As is, Amazon has signed some agreements with Aramex and DHL/FedEx and shipping via courier and customs duties/vat are consolidated and you're insured against any customs surprises. You get your item fast and the price includes taxes, what's more, you will be refunded any tax differences. I was refunded about R800 worth of duties on a Fluke last year. The item was still cheaper than purchased locally and the refund was a nice bonus.

Another thing, Takealot used to have an Amazon import service. You could order items from Amazon com and uk via Takealot and pay all fees upfront and get the item in 2 weeks or so.

Yeah and you gotta deliver 100s of packages a day and pay for your own petrol and vehicle upkeep. Not looking so rosy now.

And it's all relative. What profits they make in SA is what will determine their delivery pay here. Unless you're suggesting just because they have a strong Dollar compared to the Rand they will be willing to spend big on their SA drivers. Because Bezos has such a giving spirit..........

They are able to have speedy deliveries because they have so many drivers at a low wage, not because they pay a high wage to fewer drivers. Each driver still has to deliver 250-300 package a day., or something like that.

But I thought you said they pay them shyte.. Now you're trying change the argument.

Amazon drivers Btw get their fuel and all sorts paid for.

If you're referring to Amazon flex drivers then that's different but that's more like being an Uber driver.
 
wealthy south africans really stood out to me.
i bought LED lights for my car on takealot, saved R100 ! most car part shops marked those up by two to three hundred!
so it’ll be interesting to see how much amazon will come to dominate the market if they’re no different than physical shops on the ground.

Yeah but their ecommerce market is a lot bigger than ours. 20 of those will be in the same block and the guy will go from one house right next door. Amazon isn't stupid sending drivers around the country when the deliveries are all in one area. I don't see the point in this as they're paid to work so 10 packages or 300 it doesn't really matter if they are busy all the time. And $19 is $760 a week without overtime. In SA equivalent spend it's like R5320 so a lot more than the average.

Takealot have become flippen lazy though, half the time they can't even be bothered to ask suppliers for specs. This is also where Amazon stands out for me.
 
I just don't see how Amazon will challenge Takealot. You buy from Amazon for the niche stuff you can't get locally, or it is locally, but at stupid pricing.

Amazon isn't going to keep every single item in their warehouses. They'll keep the popular items and drop ship the rest.

If you plan on buying some niche audio equipment or unpopular car part you're still going to wait. It won't be prime same delivery.

Temu and Shein will actually rip Takealot a new one on the cheap stuff from China, Amazon won't.

It's imminent, imminent I tell you! Just wish they would launch already and for people to realise that they will have to deal with the same logistic issues and have to pick from the same labour force local companies use. I'm not seeing where they miraculously will avoid all the problems we face in South African commerce.

They haven't but the international sites have full specs. Amazon has a wealth of information no matter what you're buying or where you're buying it.
