Amazon.co.za is live

ETA for my order placed yesterday has moved from tomorrow to Monday. Not off to a good start

Amazon, South Africa edition. :)

Best to avoid it. If you want that stuff, buy from Temu. Otherwise use the other Amazons.

Not off to a good start. My order still hasn't shipped. Contacted customer service and according to them it's because 3 items are temporarily out of stock. They cannot say when the order will ship. Order still shows it will be delivered by Monday.

It's strange since everything I ordered showed as in stock when I ordered.

Sold and Fulfilled by amazon or only fulfilled by them?

To be fair, sometimes Amazon dot com orders also take several days to ship even though they say they're in stock

True, but would have expected them to ship today. If they have any chance of delivering by Monday then the order needs to be shipped by tomorrow at the latest if they ship from Cape Town in order for it to get to the nearest big centre and then to here.

Not just for frugal folks. The cables are excellent.

Is there a BEE stake in the local offering? The slightly downtrodden nature of the catalogue (Volkano tat, shitty books, no high end electronics) doesn't feel like the Amazon I'm used to.
Definitely feels sinister hey. It's only a matter of time until the same local TA resellers to start flooding Amazon with many thousands of the same generic rebranded products currently bloating Takealot's SKU numbers. Guess there's clearly a demand as the amount of those 'generics' have only increased over time.. not to mention the fact that it feels like Makro's entire non perishable catalogue is available through TA

Imo it's inevitable that the same will happen with Amazon, I'm just hoping that they prove to be an avenue for better product variety, actual good deals, and that their algorithm finds a sensible way to handle the categorization and promotion of the swathes of low effort generics.

Bought some German made tools yesterday
Paid the same as the dollar price converted to rand. Way less than the one or 2 local places prices
Also got 2 books at 50% off other local pricing.

Ordered late last night, delivered early this afternoon via Courier Guy
Came in a Amazon.co.za branded plastic padded envelope
Everything 100% perfect condition

EDIT: I see some prices have already changed since yesterday on products I'm ordering more of

Amazon’s South African marketplace has quietly gone live, offering shoppers free delivery on their first purchase.

Just five months ago:

The local guys could still win this, at least in the marketplace space. Someone gave the example of Allegro already. But there is another example Ebay vs Yahoo Auctions. Yahoo Auctions died out just about everywhere and Ebay took over, well except for Japan where Yahoo! Japan Auctions is king and Ebay had to withdraw.

In reality, I don't see Amazon "winning" in our marketplace space anytime soon. I see them being a credible competitor and if their pricing and delivery is up to snuff I see them slowly gaining marketshare. At some point the existing players will either need to step up and sort their kak out to maintain their marketshare or they will slowly become irrelevant.
