Hi Slaapy, Sorry to hear about your family's misfortunes. It is not nice at all (and that is an understatement).

Be that as it may, I have to reply tosome of your comments;
1) I am not an ANC supporter/member/voter (so don't you ever paint me with that brush again..cause you do not know me, like I don't know you..ok)
2) What do you mean your people. Do you mean black people? Again please don't make assumptions that I am black.

Your other comments like electricty problems, interest rates hikes, bad roads.....having the priviledge of travelling to Europe, UK and the States over the last few years....they too have similar problems in fact some of the major roads in the US are in a shocking condition. It is amazing how people will complain about roadworks holding up traffic etc when actually they should be happy that we still have road maintenance happening. I have also been to a few African countries up north from our borders and boy...there is no evidence of any roadworks happening. Funny thing other places have murders too, in fact while in Kansas City (spent a week there) on the news for 4 nights in a row they reported on people murdered in that city. It is also interesting that New Zealand is suffering from black outs as well, why because there economy, like ours, has outgrown supply. Oh yes a friend of mine from Holland (Amsterdam) keeps on complianing about the petty crime like car break-ins which is happening is his area. I don't mean to brush off the bad situation we face in SA but we are not unique...and remember bad news sells 10x faster than good news. Our papers are filled with bad news.....

As people who buy online, we are generally scrounging for that something that no-one else has...and on most occassions will take it from the company that gets it first. Understandably, PROPER IMPORTED DISKS, if not available from a local supplier, do tend to have the heftier price tag. The sad thing is that local companies don't continue to press 'obscure' titles if it no longer does the turnover. What do we do? If you want it...and L&L can get it...I'll pay it.

Suprisingly No. I hardly ever find it that new titles cost more. In fact most
shops run pre-order specials and there are so many cut price retailers on EBay.

A music CD which cost R250 at L&L cost $15 at Amazon, cost me $7.50
on Ebay (retailer). Shipping (with insurance) cost me $9 = 16.50 x 8 =
R132. $7.50 is not enough to incur customs/VAT. I saved at least R100.

Now L&L could get that CD for LESS than $7.50. A co. sold that CD at $7.50
to make a profit but L&L can go to the supplier and source from there
for way less, maybe $5. I'm also sure L&L get negotiated shipping for
less than $9. So why does L&L charge so much?
 
Hey Syndyre and PeterCH, point taken. It is not stated civil law but commercial unwritten law. PeterCH your explanation was clear and too the point, thanks. Having rechecked my notes, it was more reference to the commercial selling than the end user purchaser, which is what we were debating.
Thanks for the enlightenment, although your sarcastic comment (PeterCH) was out of line and not being of you as you clearly can articulate yourself when getting a point across. Don't stoop to the lowest level of wit, as you are far above that. Not that you need my accolades. I can only assume it was to solicit a response..touche.

My comment was not meant to be sarcastic.
I use "learned friends" all the time IRL. So I didn't mean to offend anyone.

At the end of the day we all want the best deal. If buying it on Amazon, at L&L or at any other Froogle.com found retailer. :)
 
For profit my dear Watson.....also our market is very small to that of the US. Take clothes for example, the cost in the US is ridiculously cheaper than the same product here. Simply because in the states they order 10000, we order 1000 and do not attract the discounts associated with bulk buying. US population 300m - with a 6% unemployment rate. SA population 45m - with a 35% unemployment rate..........thats why we pay more for things....

Never had a problem ordering from Amazon through USPS. I had a big wish list waiting to be executed - maybe now not worth my while. Which other int online shops do you guys use? Anybody ever ordered from e-bay, trust that less than SAPO.

CDUniverse,
DVDPacific (may have to wait 6 weeks max sometimes)
Ebay.

Look for Ebay sellers with high sale numbers
and with free or $1 INSURED shipping.
Ebay is just a big website for smaller shops, many
of which are way cheaper than Amazon.

Type in the name of your DVD on Ebay.
Look at the list of results.
Look for INSURANCE in description.
Look for rating and sales volume.

Not that. L&L imports DVDs from USA. They get them cheaper than I
can get them (being an individual) and then charge way more than
one could reasonably expect. Its called - ripping off the naive customer.
People who shop online and have PayPal can order the item
from one of about 100.000 shops out there and get it cheaper.

Why show loyalty to a company which treats its customers
badly?

You merely emphasise my point here. You just compared us to 7 odd different locations. One of which is the second largest land mass on earth, which makes it inherently troublesome to maintain a road infrustructure. We are a single TINY little state of governance by comaprisson, and we cant get it right. Further more we are going backwards.

My inference that you are black was based on your socio-political stances, as well as your use of language (I.E.: Someone trying REALLY hard to sound enlightened, however you tell is you change your language based on what you are talking about...all very strained). Based on the fact that you are pretty out of touch with what is happening on the ground in this country I am also willing to bet that your folks are upper income earners. I will also infer that you are probably a fine art student or the likes, those tree hugger hippie types always have a self righteous ethereal droning in their sentences.

So wrong, so very very wrong.

My parents are ordinary middle class folk , who had to work very hard to put their two children (not 10) through school and varsity.
I am a civil engineer by training (not practicing) and would be considered an LSM 10 in the economical scale of things.
I am definately not a tree hugger hippie type.
I am not trying to sound enlightened as I have nothing to prove. Merely stating that complaining and moaning is not always the best form of attack.

Sorry I don't fit your perception of me but we can't be right all the time. As this is a public forum I will not divulge any more information. If this doesn't show you how wrong you are then nothing will.

You have your views and will not change because of your experiences (and rightly so), pity as sitting on the couch playing couch rugby (i.e. you moaning all the time) is quite different to playing the actual game (doing something constructive to change this country into something good)....but that will be a huge assumption on my part (i.e. that you are not/have not done something to better this country) and I have been called a "dumbass" once today which is enough for me

This honestly makes me sick! I don't even want to know other countries think of South Africa as I am too embarrased to ask. It's sad that I have to drop my head in shame when ever I tell a forrign person I'm a South African. If lack of services due to government ignorance and xenophobic attacks are not bad enough, then we have majour businesses like Amazon refusing to do business with our post office, why? Because of petty crime?

It just goes to show that the poeple commiting these offences have absolutly no morrals or standards at all. Even if I were poor and living on the street I couldent even bring myself to as low a level as these people, have they no shame, no pride in their country?

SAPO, Proudly South African... MY ARSE! It's all fine and dandy to wear the proudly south african logo, but these people have NOTHING to show for it. Whats worse? they can still come to work the next day with that grin on their face and feel absolutly nothing for what they have done. TISK TISK TISK!
