I'd love one, but US plug + limited titles and no blog/newspaper subscriptions are driving me away

Oh, and the stupid price of R3400 from want it all

Newspaper subscriptions will be available for $4.88 per week.

We will have access to 160 000 of 200 000 titles in the book store.

Yes, it does ship with a US plug but an adapter costs R20.

Kindle 2 can charge over USB. I agree that limited titles, and additional charges for international users when buying titles decreases the appeal, though.

The Kindle would be a very nice thing to have but I fear that the 3G charges are going to be pricey especially here in SA. We should get access to all new releases of best sellers though. This is exciting but also very pricey

The average price for a newly released or best-selling book is typically $11.99 (R88.90) and South Africa will initially have access to 160 000 titles.

If it can be sold at +- R 2400 and I can get newly released best-selling books at +- R90 it certainly looks very attractive.
My only query is re. the 3G data charges involved?
That could sink the whole idea locally if it will be charged at current rates.

The US version retails for $259. The price difference is supposedly there to cover the 3G costs.

They say the 3G is free... They're covering that cost.

Uhm no, i seriously doubt that:

Details regarding which network will support this and the costs associated with it have not yet been revealed. It has however been confirmed that Vodacom is an international partner to AT&T in terms of South Africans travelling abroad. As a result Vodacom appears to be a viable South African partner tol carry the Kindle service locally.

In short, you sure as hell will pay R2 for every little MB you squeeze out of this thing, not a chance Vodacom is gonna offer this for free.

3G will not be for free and R37 a week for what? no thanks you can keep it.

According to the Amazon blurb: "Free Wireless: Free 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle. No monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots."

They also have a coverage map, which includes coverage in SA. It probably is Vodacom, and I too would be surprised if Vodacom didn't want a cut, but, they say it's free!

The R37 a week is only if you want to subscribe to the US newspapers. Otherwise you just pay for the books you buy.

looking forward to this one- although R500 would be a better price, but I guess thats not going to happen any time soon

I'll get one when I can upload books from my PC and when I don't have to worry about Amazon deleting books that I have purchased off the device without my consent and/or knowledge.

I'm so new to this but have seriously considered getting a reader and was very envious of the US - Amazon Kindle. When I heard it was coming to SA I was so thrilled. But 3G costs, US power supplies and now Amazon deleting books ?? How sad

Is it true that the books you pay for get deleted without your consent?

A few months ago there was an issue regarding rights to George Orwell's 1984 and Amazon remotely deleted it from Kindles. Caused quite a stink and Amazon now promises not to do this again.

Gonna be like the iphone, 5000 rand and then u must still have a talk 220 contract!!!
